8274-50 questions

Yesterday I got my new(to me) 8274-50 installed on my Jeep.
First thing I noticed was that my incab controller wouldn't work. My old winch was a 3 pin, as is the older 8274's and My new winch is a 5 pin. What I found, (OK I called a fiend) is that it has a negative(ground) interrupt. So to make it work with my current controller, I had to make a ground, to ground all the Relays.
Should I leave it this was, ie always grounded, like all older style winches?
or would you run another wire incab, another toggle to send ground when needed.

My thought is the germinate ground will be fine, as I already have a power disconnect( to the relays) in cab.

Second question is I noticed a small "wet" spot of lubricant at the bottom. How do I check the lube to make sure I don't damage the winch.

Third question. My old winch had a cable fix that allowed me to run a big clevis instead of a hook. I feel better with the clevis, but the new winch doesn't have a big enough loop in the end to allow me to use the clevis. Thoughts on how I could change this other than cutting the cable and making a larger loop.
Thanks in advance.

Hey Chip, this should help with the wiring and the idea of a fill hole for the winch.

As for the eye in the cable, I'd imagine you'd have to cut and make a new eye. OR, for about 40-50 bucks, you can have a brand spankin new one made to your specs, in Charlotte. PM me for details if interested.

YEah I searched that link, but the winch Bill is using is the older 8274. It doesn't have the ground interupt like the newer 8274-50 does. Kewl write up and tech though. I am thinking I might just tap a hole in the front like he did to add oil when needed. Kinda looks as if I would have to take the whole thing apart to fix it.

I have the in cab working, that wasn't my question. My question was should I leave a germinate ground or not.

Gotcha. Man I'm a slow tonight. I wouldn't see why you'd need a toggle for the ground, IMO, since you have a (+) power on/off switch already in place. If anyone wants to disagree with me, they'll have to provide a scenario/drawing as to why cause I don't see the need.

for the lube questons...

there should be a fill plug at the top of the gear housing. pull it off and stick something in there to see the level of the oil. I had an older 8270 that I filled to the fill plug and ran with it. Never had any problems

OK I have looked. Can't find a fill plug. Bill Vista drilled and tapped a hole to fill his.

Any pics of what you are talking about would be great

just pop out the release lever or anything that'll access the case and add 6 oz of 30-wt. non-detergent and call it a day...

here you can see the oil fill at the top and the oil drain at the bottom of the older 8270. Not real familiar with the 8274, so I don't know if it has the same type of drain and fill...

Nope, totally different animals. Mine has nothing like that. I was told I could take the free spoolhandle off and fill it thru there.
