I bought an 84 XJ 2.5L, 4 speed, and who knows what t case, for build a budget beater out of. I am not wanting to put a lot into it, but don't wanna have to worry about snapping an axle the first rock she(yes, this one is gonna be Leslie's first) tried to go over. It now has the dana 30 front and good ol dana 35 rear. Yeah I wanna get those out of there. I would love to buy a set of axles already geared. I will probably weld the rear, and lock-rite the front. It's a shame I have a 10 bolt and 12 bolt, already geard 4.56but the 10 bolt is pass drop, and I need a drivers drop. Making new brackets don't seem to be too much of an issue. Full size will be good too. It will see some road, but not a lot. Some rust places in the floor pan to fix. The carb works, got me home, but it's sure not something that will work in the woods. Probably to a Impco 125 on it, and not worry about that part. IF I can get the right gears I have a set of 35's to go on it. So, what are you XJ guys running?

what are you wanting to run? those 35's or 33's. i would be looking hard for a rear replacment option but if your staying under 35's why go through the time/effort and $$ to change out the D30 (therse no cheap route up front) bUT for the rear i would look for a 8.8 or D44 from a Ckee. the 8.8 will be a lil cheaper but the 44 will bolt right up. im running 35's D30/8.8 spooled rear lockrite fornt and 4.88's im really happy with the 4.88's but i have a 4.0ho. If i were you the least i would go is 4.88's. if you feel like taking the time and the $$ to change out the front you can go deeper (5.13)

I'm running a Dana 30 front with a lock rite, 4.56s and 35s for the rear I have a Chrysler 8.25 with 29 spline shafts and a limited slip also has 4.56s I also have a 4.0 HO.

Chip, if the front shaft has a ball type booted CV, it's a NP207. AFAIK, there's no easy way to put a double cardan shaft on the front that will easily bolt up to the flange. If you really want to run the chevy axles, just throw a regular old jeep D300 under it and get your passy drop. It will bolt right up to the tranny if it's an AX-4, which it should be.

Yup that is what it is.

NP207 - "Command-Trac" part-time only - 2.61:1 ratio low range - used 84-87.

PS ....glad to hear you got home OK :driver:

Yeah, shaky at first, Spit and sputter bad, then I figured romp it, and it took off. Must have been trash in carb or something. After that a little dead spot if you eased into it, but if you give it more pedal it went good. Some sway, nothing bad. Drove pretty good. Battery was dead, put another one I had in it and it cranked right up, I don't even think it spun over once before it fired, played around in the ditches a bit.

Great news that I can bolt a 300 up to it, leaves me the option of a 4:1 kit, and or a crawl box, like I have in the CJ. Not sure if I will stay with the coil overs or go with leaves.

The tires I may use are Grappler MT's 35X12.50

It is a 207, I was under it today, but it also has a regular ol CV type shaft in it, no boot.
Will a 300 still bolt up? Hope so, kinda comitted to buying one.

The 207 has the same bolt pattern as a 231, so it will bolt up. One thing I haven't considered is spline count. Let me consult novak on that.

The tranny is most likely going to be a 21 spline output. You already know the 300 is a 23 spline input. This would either be a good time for the crawl box and use a front half of a 21 spline 231 case out of any 4 cyl YJ, TJ, and some XJs. OR you can get a 21 spline input gear for the 300 from advance adapters for $241.50, P/N 50-3021.

Anyway you look at it, you're still ahead of the game by using the axles you already own.

OK, only a minor set back. I was wanting to get her some deeper gears anyway. So the crawl box is doable. a couple of questions though.
1. Anyone on here that does the Pirate site? there is a guy there that sells the kits for the 231 crawl box. I would like his info to get this going.
2. Has anyone here done this swap? What I see as roadblocks are room for the t-cases, and positioning for the shifters. Just at first glance seems might be a pita because of the factory seat locations.

That is the guy for the adapter.

It will be a tight fit and you will probably have to clock the doubler down and tot he driverside if you are going to try and use the D300 as PSD.

Thanks Andy, had just PMed you! LOL

KInda what I was seeing too. Might try and keep it up, and cut the floor for clearance.

Wrong there is a very easy way. Put the fornt output on there from a 231. If you want accurate info on xj come to the dark side. LOL! http://www.naxja.org/forum/

Good info in this thread about dual tcases swap I did:

Good info to know, but wouldn't is still be simpler to just swap in a 231? Seriously though, I didn't know the 207 and 231 were the same internally.
I have 3 207/s here. I was told the chain was even the same. I have not torn into a 207 yet but have been in may 231's. As far as I'm concerned it is easyer to remove a DS and a nut and to replace them again then it is to remove 2 driveshafts and a tcase and replace them again/ :flipoff2: At the time I did my mod on my 207 (at least 5 years ago!) I was on a super tight budget. I am still on a tight budget but the toys have gotten more creative! LOL! :bounce2: If anyone ever wants to know about 84's don't hesitate to ask I wheeled one for 5 years and have one behind the shop fairly complete minus some parts sold/used off her.
