I've got an 86 Ford F350 2wd, looking to convert to 4wd. I know a D60 solid axle would go great in there, but could I go with a more affordable option? Its an F350 w/a dump bed and 14k or so GVWR. Are the TTB setups used in the F250's strong enough? What about an 8-lug D44? The existing beam across the front couldn't possibly be as strong as a D44 solid axle, and the 6.9 isn't exactly a powerhouse. Im just looking to get 4wd to pull out of those rough areas where 2wd isn't enough.

I wouldnt swap a TTB into anything other than the scrap yard. 44 would be cheap and the frame should be ready for mounts

Whats wrong with TTB? Its a dumptruck, not an offroader, so Im not too concerned with flex.

My beef was constant alignment issues even just on the road. Not sure if yours will have all of the mounting points for a TTB on a 2wd vehicle. Put some mud tires on:flipoff2:

I have ttb on a 95 f-250 and I hate it with a passion. I will purchase a d60 front end as soon as I find one with the correct gears and in decent shape.

TTB is not part of ford's finer moments. It sags, and wears tires twice as fast as a straight axle.

The TTB front isn't worth the time because of the weight you haul. You'd be replacing parts way too often. A solid 44 will have the spring mounts too far in. I think it would hold up better than TTB, but you really should look for a 86-91 Dana 60 and get some leaf springs and go for it.

ford f-350's came from the factory with ttb from 80-85. it was the ttb d50 that was also used in the f250.

Thanks for the input yall. I believe Ill keep an eye out for a cheap 60.
