So my runner has had a hole in the condenser precooler since I bought it 2nd hand (previous owner had the hood latch support beam bolt make a new home in the precooler). So I've been told that the precooler is only sold with the condenser and that the 4runner had this but the trucks did not. The precooler does not even show up on the parts explosion on the dealer microfiche. My question is, can I use the hard line from a truck and bypass the damaged precooler? The hardline runs from the dryer to the precooler on the 4runner but runs from the dryer to the lower part of the main condenser in the trucks. Will this affect the cooling performance or affect the compressor since the volume of the system will be reduced? Is the precooler required because of the 4runner's larger interior volume? Running around with top off was fun, but now it's just hot :(

Your AC

Precooler?????
All systems have the same basic components. Compressor, Evap, Condenser, expansion valve and dryer/receiver. It could possibly be a second condenser but that is highly unlikely. Suspicions further underscored by nothing in dealers parts catalogs.
Given its age and net worth, I would find some truck parts and plumb it with salvage truck parts and have a good AC man pull the vacuum and charge it with a new receiver/dryer and 134a. I don't think you will be disappointed.
