87 Toy Pup problems

So I picked up an '87 toy pickup a couple days ago, went to get it inspected and they said it had a fuel leak. Well the leak was on the fuel pump, so my brother got a NAPA replacement and installed it, but did not pay attention to the routing of the fuel lines off of it. He installed at least 2 of them incorrectly, because it was not gettin fuel and would not start. We tried and tried to start it before I realized what he had done. Well, now when I get it up to 4th or 5th gear and it's cruising at about 45 or 50, it'll buck like a bull and the RPM's fluctuate after about 3 or 4 seconds of a constant speed. At that point I have to let off the throttle to get it to stop. Did my brother ruin the pump with what he did? I had a buddy drive it and he said it feels to him like a fuel issue, so that's my best guess as to what's up. Any ideas?

87 toyota pickup, 22r (4 banger, right?), 5 speed, and it's 4wheel drive.

22r should be carb

Pull off the air filter and see if the choke plate is open. Mine will do the same thing in the mornings before the choke opens back up. You are essentially flooding the engine with the accelerator pump and there isn't enough air to mix with it. (Cause the choke is closed.) You want this condition when the engine is cold to keep it running, Just not when it's hot. If not that, then it might be a good time to clean out the carb.

I'm not so good with carbs...

One of the plates in the carb is closed, and the other one (passenger side) only closes after the throttle is pushed and I push on it. Is there supposed to be a spring or anything on that?

Uh, not surewhat you mean by the one on the pass side. I think the upper most one is the choke and the inner ones will be the actual throttle plates, One is a secondary, (Only open at heavy throttle.) i.e. whe you have a warm (Operating temp) engine take off the air cleaner top and the plate you see without looking down into the carb should be open. The other two should be closed.

You have a two-stage carb with a choke on top, the primary side. I believe the secondary "choke looking" plate opens at wide open throttle and high engine speed. Its ok if its closed at idle.

You either have a flooding problem caused likely by choke problems (old age, crud, five-thumb Bubba tinkering, all of the above, etc..) or its running lean. Black smoke out the tail pipe when it acts up is flooding. Flooding can also be caused by float level problems.

If all the vacuum lines and fuel delivery are OK, rebuild the carb. I don't like rebuilt carbs from ???? because they look great out of the box but sometimes are a universal compromise. Unless the throttle shaft is really worn, put a rebuild kit in it or have it done. Done right, you will be pleased that you have tamed the bucking bronco.

My $0.02

Fuel filter

Turns out my brother hadn't changed this out. We talked to a guy at the exxon station that owned an 86 toy. He said he was positive that it was the fuel filter, so we changed it out, and the truck runs great now. DOH!
