I have a few questions cause im not a jeep guy. My Girl freinds dad has a 88 YJ with a 4.2. It has the common problem of a leaking rear output shaft seal. I did a quick search to find a how to article, but all i could find is install info for eliminator kits. How difficult is it to replace the rear seal and if anyone could give me a quick "how too" thatd be great.
Also, after the jeep gets warm itll just cut off when it comes to a stop. It runs fine and will start right back up but when it stops itll die. He had some carb work done on it or got a re-manned carb or something, but the problems still there. Im thinking its an issue with the vaccum lines, but like i said im not a jeep guy, so thats why im asking the experts. Whats your guys take on the situation and where should i start looking to try and elimnate the problem.
Thanks Cory

I actually had the cut off whenever I let off the throttle and it dropped below idle on my '87 with the 4.2L. (manual) I was new to jeeps at the time and took it to Jeep and they told me I had a stuck valve. I ended up using a synthetic oil addative (rislone) and it cleared up.

You can get it at walmart, but there are other oil addative that you can try and many on display at the local auto parts store. I used it at every oil change until I traded it in for a new newer YJ (regret ever doing that). Rislone replaces a quart of oil, so change the oil and replace one of the quarts with rislone. I actually ran it in every vehicle I owned since until I started running Mobil 1synthetic oil.

I haven't ever had the leaky seal issue, but I would think with draining the oil, pulling the driveshaft, and possibly removing the tail cone of the tcase you could find a way to get to the seal. Not positive though, but I beleive the seal is in the tailcone itself. (I've had about 4 of them apart, but don't really remember)

just changed 1. just take out the driveshaft and pull the seal then reinstall. that simple.

Thanks Guys, that should be a easy fix. Anyone got any other ideas about why the jeep dies at idle once it gets warm? Im going to try the synthetic trick to see if that helps but i want a back up plan.
