So i just bought an 89 suburban and like an idiot i didnt check the 4x4. Seems like i have two different geared axles under it. couldnt find any tags on them and i am a retard when it comes to getting into them. How do you find out the gear ratio? Thanks guys, Rob J

You can pull the cover, ring(big) gear will have ratio number on it. Divide the larger number(no of ring gear teeth) by the smaller one(no of pinion teeth)= gear ratio.

or this

Jack up one tire if you have an open diff, or both tires if you have a working posi or locking differential. Rotate the tire one full revolution for posis and lockers and 2 full revolutions for open diffs. Carefully count the number of full revolutions the driveshaft makes. This is your gear ratio. In other words, if the drive shaft turns 3 ¾ turns, you probably have a 3.73 gear ratio. Turning the tire for twice the number of full revolutions and dividing the drive shaft revolutions by two will give you a more accurate reading.

thanks rockmafia. i will check it out tomorrow. i cant for the life of me figure out what this guy did. i want to keep the front axle because it has all new steering parts. hopefully i can a matching rear when i get the gear ratio on here. rob

Is it 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton? My 88 3/4 ton burban came with a towing package and 4.10s. In my experience most suburbans were either 3.73 or 4.10. Might narrow it down. Which axles are currently underneath it?

they are 1/2 ton. i did a quick check and found the rear axle has a bunch of junkyard # all over it. so i figured that was the one replaced.
