I have a '89 Toyota, 2.5re, and the transmissions is about out. It is a 5 speed tranny. How do I know whether it's a G or W series transmission?

I need a new tranny asap

It wouldn't be a G series at that age. W series or possibly an R series.

I don't know what a 2.5re is but you sir.....If you have a 22re would have a W56:flipoff2:

Pull the shifter boot off and look at the shifter location.

G 54= both shifters are in the tranny but they have 2 separate 4 bolt bases, and a block off plate on the t-case. (forward shift)

W 56 (A&B)= One shifter in the tranny and one in the t-case. (top shift)

W 56 (C&D)= Both shifters are in the tranny but are both on the same 6 bolt base and a block off plate on the t-case. (forward shift)

post in the wanted section

post how you make out looking for it. i am also in need of a new W56 soon!! they are pretty hard to find from individuals.

my gears r grinding when down shifting from 3rd to 2nd. now i have to double clutch it to get it into 2nd. about a month ago i was driving down 77 going around 60 and it flew out of 5th. now i can get it in 5th but when i let the clutch out it pops back out of gear. another problem is when i park on a slight hill in 1st without parking break on the truck will roll backward about 3 inches then stop then roll back another 3 inches.

does yours have any of these problems?

Your gear popping problem is probably the shifter bushing. Pull the shift boot and remove the top plate and look inside. Around the ball of the shifter is supposed to be a rubber cup shaped bushing. It's probably all crushed up and ooky looking. Marlin Crawler has a urethane one for pretty cheap. As for it rolling and stopping, that is the weight of the truck turning the engine over, one rev at a time. Usually due to weak compression. Mine will just keep on moving until it hits something and stops. 1 rev at a time.
But the gears grinding is worn syncros. Time for a rebuild or replacement like you said.

Thank you very much for the helpful info!! i have checked out the shifter and did not see a bushing like you described. maybe that is the problem it may have fell off into the transmission. i will look into gettin new one. that sucks about it rolling back. mine will keep doing until i stop it to. my buddy's jeep will stay on a vertical hill without rolling back and no parking break. but he does not have a parking break and i do. thanks again for the very helpfull info!!
