how hard are ford 9" gears to set up? ive set up a d30 before and had a decent runable pattern. but the 9" is way diff.

dont have the $$$ for someone else to do it. and i'd like to learn as much as possible

The shims go on the pinion support, making shim changes quick and easy. No need to pull the pinion bearing to make changes. If there is an axle to learn gears on, this is the one.

sounds great. i actually watch extreme 4x4 on dvr last night and found out were the shims went.
thanks guys. going to start on it asap

I just use a chisel... or screwdriver... alignment dowel... anything that'll fit in the holes, basically.
