Does the retaining plate look right on my axle? It's out of a late 70's f-150. Is it supposed to be bent around like it is?

No it isn't supposed to be bent like that but it will be fine. You're missing the backing plates for the drum brakes to take up some of that space.

I've got the shafts out to take the third out now, would it be smart to make a spacer and straighten my retaining plates? Or just roll on and not worry about it?

Yes, make or buy a spacer, and buy some new retainer plates because they're cheap and there's no reason to use the old ones again if they're bent.. New plates are $15-20 from Summit or wherever.

Sounds like a plan.
I removed the third and noticed my pinion is a little loose. I have no experience setting bearing preload or using crush sleeves...
Anyone know any good shops near Greensboro that would fix this and let me watch so I can learn?
