Many of you know I am doing a disc brake conversion on my 77 CJ5. I got a donor axle Sat. it had the 7/8" rotor and I was told that this meant I also had the 2 bolt caliper brackets vs the 6 bolt which uses a 1 1/8" rotor and many said was better to use. Well this morning I ordered all the parts to do the conversion, calipers rorots, BJ's, Tie rods, dust shields everything. Then I go down in the basement and start tearing into it, and the caliper brackets have 6 bolts not two. I am assuming this is where you get the 2 bolt and 6 bolt calipers from. Do you reckon somebody used a 7/8" rotor instead of a 1 1/8", according to Napa the calipers are also different. I need to know ASAP what I have and what it will affect. If this is the 6 bolt then it must be out of a 77 or 78 and not the later models. Will the bearings still be the same? I think I better make some calls and see if I can stop some orders from shipping. I appreciate the quick help.

You have the 6 bolt. The confusion is the 2 bolt is botled to the knuckle, on th etop portion. THe 6 bolt bolts onto the spindle. The 6 bolt uses 1 1/8 "thick" rotor. If the caliper bracket doesnt bolt onto the spindle it is the 2 bolt.

So the PO was using the wrong rotors? Or can you put the calipers for the 7/8" rotor on the 6 bolt brackets?
Well I reckon I ended up with the 6 bolt caliper brackets afterall. What a rollercoaster!!! Now I need to change my order on the dust shields, calipers, pads and rotors.

Here is what I got done tonight and the one problem I ran into.

I got my stock axle stripped no problem. The axle slid right out.

However the donor axle slid out about 2" or so and won't budge any further, it is hanging up inside, any ideas on how to get it out? Here is a pic inside the donor axle, you see why I wanted to use my stock one?

The stock axle cleaning up nicely.

Thanks to a fellow forum member who gave me some hints the U joint came right out.

The hubs on the two axles look exactly the same. I kept reading that if you were using the stock hub there was an area that needed to be ground flat for the rotor, but this is already flat. My stock hub is a little cleaner, any problem in using it, or is there a difference I don't see?

Here is a pic from the back, the one on the left has the bearings and races removed.

Thanks again for all your help. Y'all are great!

I wouldn't reinstall the dust shields, much less spend the money on new ones, IMO.

Will the dust shields for a 2 bolt caliper bracket work on the 6? I ordered them before I knew it was the 6 bolt and the photos look the same on their website, but maybe they used the same photo?

Are the part numbers on the website the same or different?

Possibly the previous owner ran the smaller ones because he "{ordered" them and that is what they sent. It probably would have worked but you would have the pistons really coming out of the calieprs when braking.

I would 86 the dust shields, they do not really serve a purpose besides keeping little rocks inside to grind against the calipers. It is easier cleaning without the dust shields.

Thanks everyone. I got all the part orders fixed and I am ready to go. By going to the 6 bolt the calipers and rotors dropped in price, quite a bit!!! This surprised me because if these were just used for a two year period you would think they would be more? Thanks again for all the friendly help and advice.

Yes but

Jeeps are the biggest mut out there. Chances are those calipers are common to a Chevy or something else hence the reason for their cheapness.

The 6 bolt caliper brackets are nice because you can use camber shims to tweak your camber. Can't do that with the brackets that bolt to the knuckle.

Hence the term AMC=Another Manufacturers Components.

As are most of the Jeeps here, new axles, new this, new that, they're mostly just Jeep tubs on top of something else entirely.
