so my rear axel has rusted so bad, i have gear fluid SEEPING threw the rear-top of the pumkin. if i hit it with a hammer, it would crumble and make a hole. it is really incredible. so anyways, i could find another axel from a 4runner, and do a simple swap. OR i could cut where the plate is welded on, clean it up, drill, tapp, install studs, make a cover, and bolt it up. OR i could put a fj40 rear axel that i already have in the back yard under it with some minor fab work. OR i could bring it to the dealership and get around $2K as a trade in. BTW, i just got done doing a head gasket job, the right way, about a week ago. please help with opinions, thoughts and suggestions. thanks. *J*

I've seen this on many northern vehicles, you are better off finding a new housing/axle assy.

The rust is in a broader area than you are seeing, and will be tough to weld with out burning thru.

Quite possibly more work than it is worth to save

The fj40 axle has an offfset diff and a different size ring gear. My friend has a runner rear axle sittin in his field. Pm me your number and I can get you hooked up with him. He doesn't want a whole lot for it. I will give you more details
