I've had this problem twice with my '92 Cherokee. I turn the key, the lights and accessories come on just fine, but the starter does absolutely nothing. Both times I got around it by putting the jeep in nuetral and letting it roll a little bit. Then put it back in park and it starts. When it does start, it turns over just fine.

I'm guessing its a neutral safety switch. Or maybe a bad solenoid on the starter. Any thoughts on either of those? And is there anything else I should check out while I'm at it?

If it is the neutral safety switch... should I replace it or just bypass it?

its an XJ...99.9% sure its the NSS. The replacement cost is ridiculous, like $300. Its easy enough to take apart and clean, reinstall. Google it, you'll find its very common.

As said above. I hope the Best for you.. to be such a simple fix the cost is stuiped. Try Cleaning it first.. If im not mistaken though, the older models are cheaper.

10 cent fix.
I have a 92 that did the same thing and there is a very simple fix BUT keep in mind IT WILL START IN GEAR like this. There are 2 conector's 1 gray & 1 black near the fire wall on right side (passenger) of engine. Verify that the black conector goes to the safety neutral switch that is located on the right (passenger) side of transmission. Look on the black conector & you will see letter's on the conector... use a splice conector like I did on the B & C wire's. This will fix the starting problem you are having

you can also jumper the starter relay in the PDC to eliminate the NSS.. just strip like a 2" piece of wire and go from the negative coil side to another negative coil side.. I think that the fuel pump relay works for the ground connection IIRC. no wire harness cutting/splicing required, easy to remove too.. i have a spare NSS, PM me if you want to go that way.. but mind you in addition to starting in gear with the wiring fix, cruise control won't work either.
