A few days ago I decided to check the gear oil level in the front diff. It wasn't up to the fill hole so I filled it, and it took almost a quart. It started leaking badly out the right side axle tube after that. I remembered having that problem when I pulled the right side axle shaft out to do ball joints about 1.5 years ago, but it had pretty much gone away. I found the right side ujoint was shot a couple days ago. I'm not sure if that causing the shaft to wobble or me pulling the shaft a long time ago caused the leak, but I'm guessing the axle seal is bad. Today on read on dieseltruckresource.com that the oil is only supposed to be filled to 3/4" below the fill hole and if you overfill it it will leak. Has anyone else heard that? I'm going to replace the ujoint and the seal this weekend. Just wondering if there's something else I'm missing here.
