Hey folks, I have had a couple of intermittent problems with an old Cherokee I have. One is the no crank deal that mostly turns out to be the neutral safety switch. I can usually get it to start by leaving the ignition switch in the on position, and manually closing the starter relay. The diagrams show voltage coming straight from the ignition switch to the hot side of the starter relay coil. When it won't crank over, there is no voltage there. Like I said, I can get it to start by manually closing the starter relay, so that really ain't a big deal to me right now. I have replaced the electrical part of the ignition switch, but that didn't help. But if anybody has any ideas, I'm listening.

Second problem I have that rears it's ugly head from time to time. After running for a while, the engine will just stop. Try cranking it, and it will turn over but will not start. After cooling down a bit, it will crank and start. I got it to replicate tonight, and I had no spark. I did seem to have 5.something volts coming from the computer to the Crank Position Sensor. The diagram I have seen says 8 volts. I tried to measure the resistance on the CPS, but wasn't getting anything consistent, but it was dark out, and I'm not sure I was reading in the right place. All that said, does it sound like the CPS is going/gone bad? It doesn't look like it would be that big of a deal to change, but I don't wanna be a parts changer. Does anybody know of a test I can do before I buy a new one, or is the no spark a sure sign? Anyway, thanks an awful lot for reading

I would buy a new one. And I would get an OEM one from RockAuto or go to the stealership. Do not buy the cheap CPS off Amazon/eBay or the local parts store.

Yes It sounds like the CPS heats up and looses its ability to do it's job. I have seee this before.

AS for the no start. Does it start in Neutral? I assume AW4? If it does your NSS is dirty and needs cleaning. I was lazy and just grounded mine.

It will not start in neutral either. I have cleaned the switch a couple of times. I've also checked and cleaned all the grounds. I don't have voltage to the hot side of the starter relay when that happens either.

Is there voltage coming out of the ignition switch in the start position?

Very good thought. The ignitions go bad in them often. My old one used a start button because of this

I need to check if there. I have replaced the electrical portion of the ignition switch
If you have the volts coming out then you have an issue between the switch and the relay.

Replaced the CPS today. Time will tell if it's fixed or not but I feel good about it. Thanks again for the replies. Now to figure out the no power to starter relay.
