96 stroke crank, no start

Towed down from Raleigh to Asheville on Fri, towed to the Flats on Sat, towed back to Asheville, unloaded trailer, turned off. Cranked up about an hour later to drop trailer. Pulled forward and shut down. Then went to dinner. After dinner I was going to pull the truck up to the house and get loaded up to head back in the morning, truck won't start (96 stroke). Crank, but no start. WTS light comes on, tach is moving while cranking. Pulled chip off, still crank, no start. Ran great, just dead now. I'm stumped. (96 stroke cc). CPS is new, and with the tach moving during cranking, most say this eliminates CPS. New IDM last July, prob not even 3k miles on it since, and with WTS coming on (which doesn't happen when IDM is dead, at least last time) don't think it is IDM. No check engine light is on. We're stumped. ITS sensor is fine too. Any ideas, help is appreciated. If it was a gas motor, I would say someone took the coil wire to screw with me.....

Ideas and advice are appreciated.

Thanks,
Shannon

not sure on oil pressure, is there a way to test? Just have the stock gages, plus tranny temp, boost, and EGT.

Took all the bananas out, so good there.

Thanks,

IDK about a 96 but I know on a 00 when the fuel heater in the bottom of the filter bowl goes bad and blows a fuse the truck wont start.

oil pressure gage moves when cranking, maxi-fuses are all good (#9 and #22) I think #9 is the fuel bowl one. WTS light comes on, removed chip, same deal. I'm stumped....

Thanks,
Shannon

I dont remember what # it was but its one of the mini fuses that blew on mine and the WTS light came on with it blown.

Shannon, what's the mileage on the engine? Routine service?? That sounds like a glow plug relay. The WTS light will come on even though the glow plug relay is not working. The computer won't set the check engine lite either. On a stroke, when the glow plugs aren't on for a cold start, they ain't happy. I have one, I know!! You can use a volt meter to check to see if 12V is passing the through the glow plug relay. Let me know what you find.

Only 172k mileage, religious service, very well taken care of.

Clarification, the oil pressure guage is NOT moving when cranking.

We'll check all the fuses. You are talking fuses under the hood, not inside the cab, right?

Thanks for the help.

Gp relay is clicking and it is the upgraded stacor unit replaced a couple of years ago. But something to check.

Probably a glow plug or 2 have died. My dad had this problem with his and it turned out to be 2 bad glow plugs.

Thanks for all the help. Buddy with a scanner checked it out today, was throwing code for IDM. Plugged in a spare IDM and cranked right up. IDM was purchased 6/16/09, so hopefully still under warranty.....will find out tomorrow.

I am in Fuquay, but truck died down in Gerton (Asheville), so it is still down at Karl's place. Appreciate the offer.

Thanks again. I'll let you know how it goes. This is actually good news that now we know what it is. If not under warranty, bad news is new IDM for $900.

Shannon,

Has anyone informed you that there is a part to correct the idm module failure? Some mechanics don't even know about it. The valve cover gasket on your engine have a bulkhead for wiring. The wiring that passes through the bulkhead is the idm wiring and glow plug wiring. Under the valve cover gasket, the plug will work loose and the idm will begin to arc against the block. About one or two of those and it shorts out. I had this happen to mine (99 model). It puzzles mechanics because they dissasemble the valve covers and check the injectors and glow plugs. When they reassemble it, the loose plug is re-seated. I found a used, guarenteed idm on the net for $250. Here is some info on the harness clips: http://www.forddoctorsdts.com/articles/article-05-10.php
i have also seen them on ebay from time to time. Good luck.

I ended up getting 2 refurb IDMs from autocomputerexchange.com. One for spare. Had water in the IDM so pretty sure the plug under valve cover isn't the issue. Good info though.

Thanks,
Shannon
