I found a video on this, but haven't had any luck finding it again, so here is my take on it. None of the apps I can find ( torque pro and car gauge pro )will read the Cam retard offset on a 96 to 98 Chevrolet. If you know of one let me now and I will give it a try. IF you can get either of the two apps I mentioned to work let me know how.

I had this issue on my 1996 K2500 350 vortec.....right or wrong, I used the check engine light as a go/no go gauge. Small adjustments, clear the light, wait to see if it resets.
I started by setting the dizzy to stock/ cyl 1 at tdc location and worked clockwise, then counter clockwise. I think you have 2 deg. to play with.

I didn't realize you were posting a how-to (just watched the video). Good 'hack' though.

If you don't have a sacrificial dizzy cap, the hunt and check method was pretty quick, and fortunately the ECU trips the code immediately, so it isn't something you have to drive around waiting on.

I'm with @shelby27604 , didn't realize that was your how to video! Cool! I hadn't ever had that code come up and never realized the vortec motors had ANY adjustment in the distributor.. learn something new every day.
