97+ XJ steering shaft U-Joint

The u-joint in my XJ steering at the box is toast, I see replacements listed for the steering shaft assembly as being 90-96 specific, and no options for 97+.

Any good options out there? Replacement U-joint, universal shaft, just sack up and deal with sloppy steering?

How in a hurry are you? I have an 01 and a 95 parts jeep behind my shop. I can probably compare them next week. To my knowledge the shafts are the same.

@ghost no hurry at all, just doing some research so I can have the parts in hand before it is a hurry.

well the 96 and older XJs have the GM Saginaw steering column, 97 and up is Chrysler with electric airbag. How that affects the steering shaft, I have no idea.

They are definitely different.
01 has no seen second joint

95 has two “seen” joints.

One thing I did not look close at was the lower joint. IIRC the 96 down has bolts on both sides and is replaceable. I'll look back when I go back over there tomorrow and report back.

They both have joints to the box what I did not look close at was if they were the same joint.

I've got it all. Sounds like you need the whole steering linkage. That may cost 2 12 packs!
