Ok so one of the step sons is looking at getting one for a dd. I don't know anything about them. Are the motors in them strong reliable motors? What about the transmissions? Thoughts?

I've got a 99 4wd frontier so power train is the same. The v6 is just meh and I'm not a fan of the design.I get 18 mpg. It's nip designed and it shows. Why in the hell did my dad want and buy one I'll never know. Inheritance is how I got it and why I drive it.
I've got a coolant leak somewhere under the plenum so it has to come off. While it is off, gonna change all sensors (yep,AIC is under there),hoses, gaskets, spark plugs(you read that right),and whatever I can think of while the plenum is off.Knock sensor is under the intake...fuckin japs
DON'T clean the throttle body....been chasing them deamons since Mathew came through...agin,fuckin japs
The 5 speed works like all other 5 speeds.Rear has a locker/limited slip/something back there.
Other than that,it's been normal for me upkeep.

Thanks that tells me exactly what I needed to know.

I had an 01 frontier v6 I liked it and would get another one if the price was right.
That said they were know to have coolant leaks like stated above and are an interference motor so timing belt breaks your sol

I owned several 95-99 nissan trucks and pathfinders over the years. They were all great trucks, and at that time were almost Toyota build quality in my opinion.

Vg33 is a good motor. "Supposedly" interference but isn't. Doesn't hurt to keep up on the timing belt. Water pump driven by accessory belt but have to remove timing belt to get the pump out. Fairly solid motors. Automatic are good, as are the manuals. Got several customers with them.

So sounds like they are decent motors but are not easy to work on?

They are good motors, some things are annoying to do on them but it's not terrible in my opinion. Definitely not Jeep i6 easy, but except #6 spark plug and valve cover gaskets requiring plenum removal, it's not bad, just a little more r & r involved.
