Loaded up the mower on the trailer and took off this afternoon...I pulled off from a stop sign and SURPRISE! A severe grinding noise and slight vibration from under Tahoe (1999 4dr).
First I had EVER heard anything like it or any other odd noise from underneath. Tahoe is driven every third day or so - I drove it a couple of times Sunday with the window down and didn't hear or notice anything.
When I heard the grind today, I stopped but it wouldn't move in reverse...I moved forward 4 feet, then reverse was fine (noise and grind still there).
Tranny fluid is full, clear red, and smells fine...just had it flushed with new filter/fluid about 12k ago. It's push button 4wd - put it into 4lo and VERY LOUD GRINDING when I moved forward...and a pronounced clank when it returned to 2wd. Grinding was still there in 2wd, but significantly less than 4wd.
I did some research tonight, and found two possibilities:
1. Fluid = newer GM TSBs recommend the AllTrack II Synthetic lubricant (Blue) rather than the old Dextron III (Red). It has a 2 qt capacity, but I am going to get 4...2 to use for a couple days to flush, then two more for a second change.

2. Snap ring in tail shaft of tcase is prone to breakage...here's a link:

Any other ideas? I'm thinking $30 in fluid and a $3 snap ring is worth the effort before I take it to a mechanic.

i kinda of remember having this problem a couple years back on several of our customers tahoes and suburbans, its been awhile but it seems we had to replace the chain and several of the bearings inside and also there was a sanp ring upgrade, but like i said it was more than two years ago, someone else will chime in,but i dont think its a fluid issue,my money is on the bearings or chain

I just rebuilt one and another mechanic friend of mine is rebuilding one now. Is it a 246 NP? junkyard wants $900-$1100 for one, give me a shout if you need some help on it, I replaced the chain, clutches and one bearing in the one I did and it was good to go.and yes it needs the trak II

Thanks Chase. Yep, it's the magnesium housing - 246. I'm going to do some more "driveway diagnosis" this evening and see where I go from there.
