My father-in-laws 99 TJ gauge cluster went out yesturday for some reason and his check engine light came on. Its done this a couple times before. Does anyone have any clue as to what could be the cause of this or how I can check to see what it is.

My friend's 98 TJ has been doing this for years. Its the contact pins on the back of the gauge cluster that are the problem. The robust solution is to take the cluster out, clean the contacts and reinstall with some dielectric grease, or do what he has been doing for the past 5 years and give the cluster a good wack from the top of the dash and they will come back on. YMMV on that method

clean the connections on the cluster - i do it like every 6 months to a year and i am good

This is what I do. Mine has been doing this since I bought it.

Heard the cause had to do with the seal between the windshield and body wearing out eventually causing water to run down into the gauges.
