Gauge is maxed out at 80psi when running normally (45-55mph).

Seems a little high to me, hasnt usually run that high that I can remember.

Is that okay or is that an indication of something wrong (be it sending unit, needs an oil change/filter change? etc?)

probably need a sending unit.

My gauge on my 99 XJ did the same thing. It would go all kinds of crazy. I replaced the sending unit and problem solved.

$15 fix. Change the sender, fixed mine....

the plug on my sending unit vibrated loose one time and did that exact same thing. i pushed it back on and it was fine from there on out.

where is the sending unit actually at?

Dont have my mostly useless haynes manual here with me....also where does one get a replacement? Stealership? Do I have to drain the oil to install the unit?

I do not have my jeep anymore, but from memory, it is a plug on the passenger side of the engine block, very close to the oil filter itself.

Only way you can get that pressure is with a close tolerance machining and a high velocity oil pump. I found out that oil filters are rated at 100 psi when I maxed mine out after a cold start take-off right after a rebuild. Blew the filter in two. Swapped to regular oil pump and replaced bearings to solve.
If not fresh rebuild and a cold engine for 80# pressure, then faulty unit. Most definately.

In my 98 it's right above the filter. Mounts on the filter housing to be exact, no you don't need to drain the oil but the will be a little to drain out. NAPA, autozone, advance auto, etc. Maybe 5 mins wroth of work. So easy a caveman could do it.

well at least now I know its a faulty reading and not really at 80psi...that wouldnt be too good.

Where is the best place to get a sending unit?

Why? I run close to 100 psi on start up in my jeep.

Yes, Chevy 4.3 with a high volume oil pump installed.

Check the wiring to it before buying a new one. The plug on mine vibrated off and I know it's happened to others. Free fixes are always nice.

Meant to check that today but totally forgot. Spent about 4 hours cleaning it today. Im actually going tomorrow to get a quote for dent removal, ON A JEEP!!

Seriously, this XJ is probably one of the cleanest I have ever seen.
