The seal at the pinion on the rear of my D30 front has decided to leak all over the diff housing. What am I looking at to go through the thing and get it back to factory? Also, as the title states, it's a 99, so it's non-vacuum disconnect but at the top passenger side of the diff there is some sort of hose running up into the engine bay. Haven't checked where it leads to yet but I haven't seen a diagram of an HP30 with any sort of fitting or hose coming from that area.

that just a vent hose coming off the diff. i wouldnt do the pinion seal yourself unless you are pretty handy. i think that d30 is also a crush sleeve design (i might be wrong i cant remember right now), and setting the crush sleeve requires some knowledge, an impact and a beam or dial style inch pound torque wrench

I figured it's one of those PITA things to do. Especially on a gravel driveway with no carport. I'm definitely not paying to have a pro do it so I'll probably just let it self-destruct.

I had to the rear pinion seal on my 99YJ. A trash bag floated with the wind over the highway. my drive shaft caught it. As it spun around the rear yoke it got into the seal and tore the crap out of it. The whole undercarriage from the drive shaft back was covered in stinky sticky gear oil.
It was tedious work cleaning out the gasket and ring since the rubber pretty much got torn from the ring.
Surprisingly only lost about a 12oz. of gear oil. It was just wide spread.
As for you surface, an exercise mat is great for smooth out the worst of "work" surfaces.

After looking at a diagram of the seal it really doesn't seem that difficult. I've got friends with the right tools.

i have never messed with a 99 hp 30 but mine has shims not crush sleeve did they change on the later years. back to the pinion seal before you remove the pinion nut check to see if the pinion has any side to side play because hp30s seem to wear on the outer bearing.
