Hi I'm Ed, living in Elizabeth City. I'm new to this forum, a buddy of mine referred me here.
My roommate just got an 87 Ford Ranger 4x4 ex-cab 5-spd V-6 for a song, the only problem with it was it wasn't starting. It would engage the starter, sometimes it would start, but most of the time it would either grind or simply sound like the starter was runnin free of the flywheel. He got a new starter with the truck and we figured it was just a bad starter. He got the starter out of the truck and the starter looks OK. I don't think it was shimmed correctly cuz there were no shims, each bolt just had a stack of washers between the starter flange and the bolt-head, nothing between the starter and the bellhousing.
On the other hand, the teeth on the flywheel are pretty worn down...like maybe years of improper adjustment of the starter and thus wear and tear on the flywheel. We are going to do a bit more trouble shooting on the electrical side of the house, checking continouity, connections, and whatnot, but I've got a funny feeling his flywheel is part of the problem now. He's got a Haines manual but they don't address the flywheel anywhere. Does anyone got any dirt on replacing the flywheel on one of these trucks, and also how expensive a new (i.e. better shape) flywheel would be??
Sorry for the essay and thanks in advance!!
