Anyone tried to disconnect the airbag on an XJ? I'd like to d/c the airbags at the wheel and the pass. side in my 1999 XJ. I don't want any surprises when offroad....Besides, my rig is mostly offroad...No DD here. Any advice would be great!

Thanks!

Rick

There is a wiring connector very close to the airbags. Just need to find it. Odds are the airbags will never go off when off roading. They're designed to only go off in a moderate to severe front end collusion. If you have one of those while off road, you will want them to go off.

Disconnect the battery wait 5minutes ( this allows system to discharge) look under dash for YELLOW connectors, at the base of the steering column, and just above the glove box.

disconnect these connectors wrap them with black tape.

Air bag light will probably illuminate, may have to pull the fuse for that ( may or may not turn light off)

If I remember right, air bags are disabled when vehicle is in low range anyway. to prevent accidental discharge while off road.

One of the guys in NC Krawlers had an airbag go off while offroading, and it wasn't a good experience. Thanks for the advice. I'll look for the yellow connectors....Actually I found them last night, and wasn't too sure if those were the connectors or not. There is a pick clip that prevents the connector from seperating....How do you remove that clip?

Thanks Again!

I heard one go off on lower 2, I think it was in an XJ, gave the lady driving quite a suprise. I was under the impresion as well they they would not activate at slow speeds/4 low, but apparently they can.

Just take um out, and set um off in your yard.:bounce:

My point exactly. Maybe Rockcity can use them for that "virtual buggy" he's building!:bling:

dont wanna take away from what ur lookin for but i have a 00 tj and i can shut off the pass airbag but what bout the drivers? if i unplug the clockspring will the light be on or anything? i know someone on here has been in my place.... right?

If you unplug the clock sping, your horn will not work nor any other steering wheel mounted functions ( Cruise )

Don't just set them off after they are removed. I am sure it would be fun but, those things bring a pretty penny to people repairing collision work.

Much more fun to set off. Last few years I've seen plenty in junk yards, just left to rot, seems they don't give a shti about them. I was under the same impresion that the are pretty pricey to replace.

That was Oneton's mom, and it did scare her badly, was a slow speed hit also. It was a '95-'96 XJ.
