i think this is the right place to ask this? ok so i have a push mower that dont mow. i wanna build a welder with it. has any one ever done this? if so what do i need. i have looked on the net and learned a lil bit but let me know what you know.

How much horsepower does an alternator pull ? You can mathematically determine the horsepower cost at any given load. (Remember, alternators respond to load. If there is no load present the alternator is basically freewheeling.)

Amps x Volts = Watts
Watts / 745.7 (one HP) = Electrical HP Produced by the Alternator
HP x 15% Efficiency Loss = HP Loss
HP + HP Loss = Total HP Used

Example:
57A x 14.9V = 849.3 Watts
849.3 Watts / 745.7 = 1.14 HP
1.14 HP x 15% = 0.17 HP
1.14 + 0.17 = 1.31 HP Total

(copied from another site) http://www.fuel-saver.org/Thread-ALTERNATOR-DRAG-HOW-MUCH-HP-DRAIN

a 220 amp would need atleast 5 hp from what this says

220A x 14V = 3080 watts
3080 Watts / 745.7 = 4.13 HP
4.13 HP x 15% = .61 HP
4.13 + .61 = 4.74

I pull a 63 amp weldernator on my willys. When you strike the arc,it will pull that flathead motor down some so you have to ramp the gas up a little more to keep the output rockin. Our old miller had a 12 horse tecumseh on it so I think it should work for you.

Ive never heard of doing this!!!! Sounds interesting tho...

just curious, running a computerized motor(my 97 f250) running a weldernator and welding on my truck, even if i do disconnect my battery do i still run the chance of frying my computer?

There is a chance.

It depends how you ground it. Speaking from using a standard welder, Haven't welded with a Alternator welder, You have to have a good ground close to where your welding in order to keep it from back feeding to the system.

from my readings and research,I have the stinger hooked up on the alt. output and the ground on the case. This is actually reverse polarity ( I know it doesn't sound right but science is science).Polarity is when positive is the ground.Alot of British cars are this way. This is the hookup if you are welding on the same vehicle. You need to have the ground very close to where you are welding.Ole Nellie Belle isn't wrapped up with alot of electronics so welding back on herself really isn't that big a concern for me. I carry 6011 rods that can be used in either polarity.
