Im having some alternator whoas. When I rebuilt my engine i put a new alternator in and new battery. Ive noticed after every run my battery would die. I narrowed it down to my alternator not wired properly. I have an amc 360 with the stock replacement alternator. It has 1 battery post terminal, which naturally would be to battery +. Now on the side it has 2 other connectors numbered 1 and 2. Anyone know where these go too? Im guessing one goes to another + and one is like a signal wire, but not sure. If so, where could I put the signal wire?

I'm not an electrical genius...and I'm not sure if the AMC 360 and the 5.9L 360 that was in my Ram have anything at all in common...

but I do have the FSM for the Ram 360, and I'll check to see if there happen to be three wires to the alternator...

give me a sec...

two completely different motors... not to mention different alternator wiring schemes between magnum and la blocks. i "think" one should be a ground, and one should be a field wire. or it's internally grounded and has two field wires.... most likely the later of the two if it's a post early 70's motor.

oh well...figured I'd look...

it has three wires (but it's a generator instead of an alternator)...power, feed to a leak detection pump, and a feed to the PCM...

worthless to you...sorry...

According to the two experts sitting out in my garage, (yea, I got two of them sitting out there, half torn apart, mocking me...) The single stud on the back of the alternator goes to the battery side of the ignition relay. The 2 wire plug on the edge of the back of the alt. has a large wire going to the same post on the ignition relay and the other goes to the big ass plug on the fire wall (or would be if I had a fire wall to put it on), so I'm guessing...Idiot light.

Alright...I dug out the Haynes...were gonna have to know the year on your 360...The wiring diagrams change about every so often...

For the 89 and 90 that are out in my garage it shows Red and Red going to the switched side of the starter relay (via fusable links) and the yellow (brown on mine...) goes to the ignition switch (on the column) with a split on the way going to the ignition module and to another post on the starter relay...

74 and earlier is different, 75-86 is another way, 87 and 88 are a 3rd way and then there are the 89 and up.

stud to battery, on the two pin plug the wire closest to stud goes to 12v switched wire to signal alt, and the other wire goes to 12v constant.

An altinator has to have a source of power to start it charging . one of the two posts on the back needs a hot wire run to it usualy coming from a source that becomes hot when you turn on your ignition switch. You can just put in a jumper wire from the battery post wire.

ok cool. Thanks for the info - maybe I can get this hooked up right. On the signal wire, does it need to be constant hot or just a monetary hot like the ignition start.

stud is the bat. terminal. One is 12v to field/charging wire, can go to bat. or to amp guage. should be switched... The 3rd wire is run to the dash guage bulb, during cranking it draws current and the bulb lights. Once the alt. is charging no current flows that way (buld off). If things are broken current flows that way again and tadda idiot light comes on...

the one wire alt. usually replace that with a small resistor internally. And tie the other 2 to the bat. post...

Yes you can use a momentary hot (off the starter soliniod) thats usually enough to start things...

edit: also good sign your field inst juiced is your alt. will only put out about 3-4v using the unchaged field magnets inside...
