I just bought a swamp buggy that has an AMC 20 rear (trac-loc) roughly 1977 year from CJ5 or 7 and is running 40" tires. I believe the hub is spun because the rear end was rebuilt and the driveshaft turns. I think the hub is has spun and I cannot remember how to remove just the hub to check it. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.

Kaiser Willys in Akin SC sells these. If you are going to mess with two piece axles you will want one of these!

I remember that being some kind of special offset puller, I think I am going to go to a one piece axle, however wasn't sure if I remove just the hub (or guess I will have to take the whole thing off), can I just remove the hub and put it back on myself? It has been fifteen years since I messed with an AMC20 rear. Thanks for the response.

Unbolt brake backing plate and toss everything. Buy a kit and install a 1 piece and be done. That was the easiest for me

sounds like a plan. I pulled the hub tonight and it was either stripped (and stripped the axle where the sheer goes) or there isn't one at all......you know if any of those rear ends have just spline and no sheer key????? It appears there is no sheer key on this and never was.........thanks for the response.

I thought those Model 20 axles had a tapered spline but I could be wrong.

My first trip out after a locker install I stripped my 2-piece axle. Called Tarheel and got the Moser kit and never looked back.

Tapered and keyed. I had to use a 40 ton press to get mine off. sounded like a shotgun when the damn thing let loose. I wouldn't advise anyone remove the hub due to safety. Do as said, Pull it and toss it! All you need to do is pull the bearing retainer between the hub and the backing plate and slide the axle out. then install a one piece. I used Omix Ada 1 pieces and they were fine. I don't see any sense in in high dollar Superiors on the AMC20, unless you're going to truss it at well. but at that point you'd be close to time and cost of finding a D44 narrow trac.

40" tires? AMC 20? ha ha, doesnt matter what axles you replace the stock ones with. The housing will bend. Then you will be back to the axles and ring gear.

Install a bigger axle like a 14 bolt or a 35 spline d60

where'd you get that from? Si, esta is no bueno!

Ya I am not so crazy about the 40" tires but have future plans to make the rear strong, and there are four spots to spot weld to make the housing stronger. Its a buggy not a hot rod/street vehicle so it will be fine. I ordered a one piece axle and should have it Friday. I know you guys knock the AMC 20 rear (especially with 40" tires) but believe it or not the yare stronger then Dana 44 and other rears once converted to one piece axles, and if you modify the gears and build stronger they last too. I have not owned a jeep for almost ten years so this is all a refresher to me, however I remember having a spun hub on an 1985 CJ7. Thanks for the responses.

How do you modify the gears? Where are the 4 spots that needed to be welded on said axle to make stronger. I agree they are a good axle wit some upgrades, like the D35, I know a guy that crawls rocks with 38" tires & a doubler.

Here is a link that will help explain a little about what i was talking about with the AMC 20 rear to make them a little better and stronger.

As far as the gears there are ways to weld and make there rear a posi trac rear, there are other gears you can put in. I am not sure as I dont build the rears or gears in the diffs, I have a friend that is a master mechanic that knows what he is doing when it comes to that stuff so I leave it to him......but it can be done. I can ask him for more detail about it though.

I remember reading that a long time ago.

You will need to truss that axle, welding the tubes will only keep them from spinning in the housing. The AMC20 has a weak housing & the tubes are rather weak also. With out the truss, your doomed from the beginning...

The ring gear has moderate strength, however I would not run bigger than a 37" tire.

Captbryanott, the AMC20 is fine...with 32" tires. But the time and cost to build a 20 to handle 40's is a waste. That's if you could do anything with the gears. And it doesn't matter if your on the rocks or in the mud.

Take the advice and save the effort and costs

The truth has been spoken. I have spun a hub with 31s and open diff, drove home in front wheel drive. Then years later, bent a tube on 35s, even with the tubes stitch welded to the pumpkin.

Back in the day if we couldn't borrow the proper puller it was possible to loosen the hub retaining nut a couple of turns and slowly drive around till hub loosened. Plymouths and Dodges also had the tapered with key axle and hub.
