Every now and then, and not that often. I'll be sitting at an idle and I'll here a tick that lasts only 1-2 seconds and goes away. when it starts it's kinda quiet, then gets louder and diminishes and goes away. It may tick only about 10-12 times in that 1-2 second period, only at idle and always sounds the same.

I'm kinda guessing it has something to do with AMC V8 oiling issues, but that's only a guess on my part. any ideas?

That is a common problem with Jeeps that SIT for long periods of time and don't get wheeled.

Kinda like hardening of the arteries on a Couch Potato.

It is also known as "Shoemaker's Kids Disease"

Ask me how I know -

If it goes away, I am gonna say it's a lifter issue. Pumping up and then loosing the "pump"
How many miles on engine?
What grade oil are you using?
How many miles on oil change?
Additives?

miles on engine: unkown, Quote rebuilt UN-Quote by previuos owner.... IF a true rebuild, I'd guess under 10K.

Oil, 10W40, either Havoline or Castrol GTX. Only ones I use.
Miles on Oil change, it's done it before and after, but right now probably no more than 200.
Addatives, nope

Couch Potato/Shoemakers disease.... I'll buy that! :D

I'm with Chip on the lifter. Also could have rocker arm fulcrom (ie rocker pivot) worn a bit making the lifter max out on extension and then bleeding off. Find the side and pull the valve cover and then pull the cylinder making the ticking and check the pivot and rockers. The pivot is probably aluminum and might have some wear on it.

Not sure about the validity of this, but...

my dad (and several of co-wrenchers) used to use a small amount (1/2-1 pint?) of either ATF or MMO to lube up clacking lifters... saw it myself on his 2xx CI IH powered "Johnny Reb" and again on an old 305 Chevy truck.

Not sure what it does other than lighter weight oil or if there's any long term effect... OTOH, your frame is likely to rot out from under the fiberglass tub before your junks sees another 2000 miles!

My 304 had a few ticks. I tore it down and it had a broken rocker arm and a broken stud on one of the crank keepers.

the ATF is high detergent which will help clean out blockages. ATF is also mostly hydraulic fluid, which it's self is better for pumping up a lifter than motor oil. Thats why it works. I have also heard of guys using Marvel Mystery oil for the same thing.
