Oh well, I'm gonna hold onto it anyway...might see a warewolf oneday..lol
Thanks.

By the way, can you give me a short schooling on what a ''proof'' coin is, as opposed to a regular one? I am guessing someone spent it by accident?

I have one of those too.
When I received my Eagle Scout award back in, um I guess it was early '95, the youth leader at my church gave it to me asa kind of token congrats gift.
'cept its a '64... still not worth a whole lot but cool

yeah, theyre definately cool. It really stands out in a pile of other quarters. Almost looks softer than the rest.

a "proof" coin is one that has never been touched by human hands nor circulated.

I've been collecting US Proof Sets since, well, way back when. Other than mistakes, these go up in value quite quickly. As more and more are produced they are slowing down in the increase in value, but the older ones are still going up pretty good.

Check these 2009 sets out: http://www.coinnews.net/2009/05/26/us-mint-2009-proof-set/

That reminds me - I have a coin collection I started when I was a kid. I have quite a few coins from countries that no longer exist. Including a square copper coin. I need money, I might look into selling em now!

That and my comic book collection full of 1st editions. Need to see if this stuff is worth something!!

I'll give you a nickel and two dimes for it. Three coins are better than one...Used this a couple of times with my younger sister only it would be a nickel and a few pennies.

Rippin off your little sis snappy... I know times are tough but damn! ha ha

The silver quarters are worth more. They circulated between 1932-64. I jumped at the offer of trading quarters for a little kid one time when a coke machine wouldn't take their quarter. Silver quarters makes a distinctive sound when they land. Being that I've heard one before, I recognized the sound right away. I will probably pull some time in hell for that.

Proof coins usually come in a permanently sealed plastic case, and you pay more than face value for them. It's strange to think that someone would remove one from the case only to spend it. That's instant and permanent depreciation.

You never know what those old collections might be worth though. I listed a few old boy scout order of the arrow patches on ebay recently. Some of those patches that I paid $3 for back in the 90's are selling for $150 or more now. Can you say "new tires" :)

my van guy aint no leprechaun...he aint even wearing green.
He is representing the hard working, good looking , genius that owns the van.

diggin up an old thread

a long time ago i was given a $10 1881 gold coin.

the coin contains .48 troy oz of gold.

i know Gold is pretty high right now something around $1000 a troy oz.

i dont really know anything about coins, just that i have small bag full...and have no idea where i got them. just been given them over the years by family.

Times are rough and i dont really care much about coin collecting sooooooo....

whats the best way to make money off these things and not get ripped off?

remember you have gold value and numismatic value added together.Gold coins bring a higher value numismaticly since alot where destroyed by FDR in the mid 30's.I metal detect for colonial era relics and old coins.Never found a gold coin and that club is pretty exclusive.

What you have should be a liberty head eagle minted from 1866-1907. The 1881 had a fairly large minting that year. They were minted at 4 different mints. Check the reverse of the coin at the 6 oclock position under the the eagles talons. If there is nothing there then it was minted in philadelphia. If there is a "cc" then it was minted in carson city. If there is a "s" there then it was minted in san francisco. If there is a "o" there then it was minted in new orleans. If it has a cc or o on the back then it is worth more then a san francisco or philadelphia issue. Also the better the coins condition and less wear it has also adds to its value. I have a few dealers i personally know and trust that would give you a fair price if you do decide to sell it.

cool tknopp, thanks for the insight. no mint marking on it so assume it from philidelphia.

if its worth anything i am looking to move it. its in great condition. Send me a PM with your contact and i'll give them a call.
