Any leisurely trails in NC? Thinking about buying ATV...

Wife and I are contemplating buying some atvs. We are familiar with Uwharrie, camping and kayaking there often, but never been on the trails. We camp and fly fish at brown mountain beach, heard they got 34 miles of trails, but never been on them. What I am looking for is fairly easy trails. Just get out with the wife and ride 3-5 hours, likely during a weekend camping trip. Most of what I hear about and see online shows mud bogging and rock crawling. Wondering if there are places for lames like us to ride. Thanks for any input.

Brown Mountain is a good place to ride. It's the first place I ever rode. It can be as difficult or easy as you want it to be. It all depends on which trail you take. Most of the trails are one way so be sure you have a map and are aware of the level of difficulty before you hit a trail. Here's the brochure http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5366048.pdf. And here is the website http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/nfsnc/recreation/scenicdrivinginfo/recarea/?recid=49004&actid=32. Pick up a trail map at the store on the right just before you get to the trail. You can also buy your pass there.

Thanks guys. So the trail system is comprised of many different trails? I just assumed it was one long trail and you would have to go through the bad stuff along the way.

Thanks man. Read the link you shared and see where #1 is the main loop, but it rates it as "more difficult", which makes me wonder what that means. And it appears one way so once you commit, you got to keep going, 12.6 miles. Right? Or is it a pretty manageable ride along #1?

Also, saw the Yamaha Viking UTV 3 seater. Anyone know of ANY places you can load up a UTV with gear and ride a trail to a primitive campsite? Sure love the idea, but doesn't seem to be much opportunity for this in NC. Would be great to trailer this thing some place then load camping gear and get lost for a day or two.

That's why I said get a trail map from the store. The more difficult part of trail 1 used to be designated 1-A, which is a bypass off of trail 1. The two nasty trails used to be 1-A and 9 but there's others now too.

Yea, I forgot about houser, but they dont allow camping anymore, Or I dont think they do, and they got mud, lots of it, so have a winch. But it is a lot of fun. Brown mountain does split into several trails, but they all turn rough. Or the last time I was up there about a year ago they did.

Thanks guys. I appreciate your input. Talked with the wife and I think we are heading to Carolina Adventure World on an upcoming weekend to rent their Rhino for the day and tent camp afterwards. Sounds like a great way to gauge our interest on the UTV idea and see some trails as well. I read up on all the suggestion for future reference and appreciate them. Heard there is some kind of Jamboree at URE soon and dealers may have atvs and utvs available for test rides. That sounds like a good move as well.
