Well as the title states, I will be a freshman at NCSU this august and am in the college of engineering. I was accepted into Mech. engineering but may change to Mat. Sci. or electrical engineering. I know a lot of people already there and have some friends headed there too, but I was just wondering if there are any fellow NCSU freshman on this board.

EE would be ok, but I say don't go to Mat Sci, lots more options with a BSME

I graduated in '07, but best of luck, make the most of it!

EE is rough. If I were you I'd get a BSME with a minor in Mat. Sci.

I am back at State finishing my BS that I gave up 8 years ago. I was an ME major, but I've been out so long and in the workforce that it is easier for me to just get a History degree.

Not NCSU but I will be a freshman at UNCC for engineering in the fall. Planned on going to NCSU but could not afford it. I'm debating whether or not I want to do Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis on Motorsports or if I just want to do Civil Engineering.

I graduated in '97 BSME and went on to get my PE in mechanical. ME has served me well and I have never regretted my decision. All of the "E's" are rough. Hang in there.

Sorry to de-rail your thread, just wanted to throw a pat on the back your way.

thanks everyone for the info. I took AP physics this past year and really enjoyed the electromagnetic, electric forces and fields, and electric potential capacitence units more than the work/energy/power and momentum units and I got credit for college so that is leading me to think about being an EE. Plus my dad and his dad were EEs and I have found some of what they talk about/do interesting. Another reason why I might switch over is the ease at which I could double major in computer engineering as well the higher avg pay. As y'all mentioned, EE is a little harder than ME and that is the main reason why I might not switch but then again, I may as well buckle down and do what I want to do for the rest of my life (I still don't know if I will find the more in depth theory stuff interesting or if I will even like the major since I have just hit the surface with stuff in school). Anyways, I can always switch later this year after I get down there.

So no one is going to State as a freshman this year?

I have my BSEE and my PE. Based on what you said you enjoy, then go for EE and don't be scared because it may be a little harder than ME. If you find yourself failing a class, get a tutor and don't give up on the goal and don't take the easy way out by changing majors. Trust me on that one! At least Half the people in your freshman engineering classes won't be there for sophomore year. Try to do an internship every summer. engineering internships pay pretty good and gets your foot in the door wherever you are and looks great on resumes.

I have a BS in Computer Eng. from SUNY I do computer 'stuff' but not microprocessor design type stuff like i went to school for. I find my degree helps me alot in my day to day stuff in understanding the technology. I would see where the field/industry is now (here) and where its headed. A lot has changed since I graduated ('98). As said get a tutor at the slightest sign of trouble. IMHO if your eager enough the specific degree wont matter you will end up doing something you like. My wife just graduated state in Dec. w/ a BS in Micro Biology Good luck!

im going to be a senior in Ag Business Management, does that count?

regardless of all the school mumbo jumbo. stay at UT your freshman year. you can thank me later

I've got a BSME, went to NCSU freshman year, hated Raleigh and didn't like the school culture. Transferred to UNCC and loved it. Realized that if I hadn't been dating a girl back home freshman year, I probably would've liked NCSU better.

As several have said, do internships during the summer. They look great on a resume, give you real work experience, pay pretty decent, and give you great networking. Every job I've ever gotten was because of someone I knew, not my resume. Having someone vouch for you gets the interview, and the resume gets the job. The resume alone won't get the interview most of the time.

If I had it all to do over again, I would have joined the Air Force and let them pay for my college, retired at 40. Or went premed and straight to med school to become a surgeon. I'm contemplating that route now, but being 26 and already tired of school, I don't know if I can take another 5 years and $200k in debt.

There are a lot of 'good' jobs in engineering, but for most of them, you better like math, procedures, and not working around girls.

Get a degree in psychology. 2:1 female:male ratio. That's more important.

I really like Psych too and plan on taking some psych classes just for fun and well, to meet girls. Fortunately State's Girl:Guy ratio isnt as bad as it used to be. 45:55 overall for undergrads. There is always Meredith and UNC close by if I am that desperate.

Thanks VortecJeep, yager, and Jeepinmatt too. I am kind of thinking about ROTC, but that may be too much on my plate. It is great how you can get scholarships and stuff but at the same time, you have to work during football games. It sounds superficial kind of, but I want to enjoy the college experience too and tailgate and go to as many games as possible. I am in touch with a person in the Marine ROTC program and he loves it, but it takes up all of his time. I have put a lot of thought into it (pretty much the past 4-5 yrs and seriously the past year and a half), but I will look into it.

I am staying at UT haha

smart move. seems like i told you to stay there in some previous thread

UT advice
- party with as many chicks as you can the first week before they all get broken up into their sorority clicks, you'll be set.

- the food will make you shit multiple times a day, its good but has a reputation.

- you can smoke (cigs) in the fire escape stair case on the dan allen deck side. the bathroom works great if you arent in the best shape, just turn on the hot water :huggy:

- hang out around the smoking bench around 2am, you can take your pick of the hotties that someone else paid to get drunk.

- dont waste your time trying to study in the lounges on your floor, they just turn into hangouts.

- altho inviting and they seem like a great idea at 3am, DO NOT PUNCH THE CIRCULAR LIGHTS on the hallways. they take that shit very seriously and are liable to kick you out.

- be friendly with the off duty cops who work the desk at night. they can be a great asset. i got to know the guy who almost took me downtown pretty well after our unfortunate first meeting. he turned out to be a pretty cool guy

- clean your floor as soon as you move in, they are freakin gross.

- dont play video games. you're liable to be like my roommate my first year and end up cursing at a tv screen on thursday nights instead of having fun with real people.

- cheesy bread and pokie sticks are right across the street.

dont forget Peace ;)

Ouch

This thread makes me feel old. I was a freshman at NCSU once. 25 years ago! BSEE.

I'd say pick a major you like. Don't worry about what's too hard. If you enjoy it you'll find a way. If not, you can always be a business major.
