I have a 2000 Subaru with some issues, but everything Subaru does is just a little, uh, wierd. Before I commit to fixing it myself instead of spending 4 grand on it for someone else to do it, I had better be pretty sure.

I'm going to have to replace the head gaskets for the second time (this time I've gotta pay for it, last time was under warranty). Also, the transfer case's clutches are fup duck. It's driveable now, and I'm tempted to do the bare minimum to pass inspection and then save up for parts, etc. and fix it once the CJ is ready to go back to DD duty.

On the plus side, the CJ's problems are now less than the Subaru's problems, so it'll probably get fixed first.

It should really be holding up better than that. I've never known Scoobs to have problems with head gaskets. This sounds like a symptom of another problem. As for the viscous coupler, they can be finicky. You need to keep the front and rear tires inflated the same, and make sure they're the same size tire exactly, preferably the same brand. Any difference puts excess wear on the coupler. That's about all I can give you, though.

If the air isn't completely bled from the cooling system, the air pockets will cause HG failures..

I know the thermostat is underneath the engine... thats bout it.. sounds like you need to get rid of that thing man!

According to Jon...... The head gaskets are a PITA and expect alot of work

As for the transmission clutch... is it auto or manual? and what kind? he says if it is the manual it would be the syncros not the clutchs.... Syncros by Subaru are real weak... esp the first and third gear (problem in most Subaru)
As for aftermarket stuff... you can get after market Syncros.. but they are $$$$... and probably should be installed by a transmission repair person... OR or you can get an older modal WRX sti transmission.... they have stronger Syncros.... but another PITA because of the harness...

And STI transmission will mate up to most WRX.... And some 2.5 engines

He is dating me for the Jeep... I am dating him for the racing...

It's a manual , and it's the transfer case that's messed up. I didn't get back to the dealership in time on Friday. I'm still torn. The car looks rides and handles very well but, looks like it's going to be a continuing hassle.
