As I’ve mentioned in other threads, banged up the wife’s 2007 Ford Edge a couple weeks back. I pulled the fender off an been DD’ing it since. We were planning on upgrading in January anyway, so don’t really want/need the vehicle. It’s not worth the hassle to me to try to sell for the few hundred I’ll get out of it. I’ll be damned if I get a couple hundred out of it in trade in value, when it’s a perfectly functioning vehicle. And it runs/drives too well to just scrap it. So I’m thinking I’ll buy the $300 worth of fender and headlight and just donate/give it to someone that could use it. Anyone done this or anything I need to CYA for???

We donated a vehicle several years ago to a local mission and it was super simple. We contacted them ahead of time, drive it out there and they gave us the donation form with the value left blank. It was a crappy Taurus with a busted transmission, so we only claimed it was worth like $800

Talk to your CPA, and talk to your (or a local) church?
A lot of people donate cars to get the tax credit, or at least write off.
It used to be that you just deducted the "value" of the vehicle at time of donation.
A few years ago the IRS caught onto the fact that th ou s led people to just overinflate the stated value, so they changed the rules, so technically you can only claim the value based on what the charity actually gets for it at sale.
This may not be a big deal, but if for instance you're looking for a last minute 2018 deduction it probably wont pan out (Im assuming you're always a by-the-book taxes man)

Idk if you’re looking for the tax right off or what not, but if just a simple give away to someone in need, I know a guy.

I work with this dude who is seriously one of the greatest dudes I know with the best attitude and work ethic of anyone I’ve ever known. If you seen him, you’d think he was a thug, but that’s not the case. He doesn’t make much at all, has a couple kids with his wife. They live with her mother and share one car. His wife brings him and picks him up or someone takes him home. He’s never missed a day unplanned. Grew up rough and is trying to beat the odds. For 4 years now, when I ask this guy to do something I’ve never ever heard “that’s not my job, I can’t, I’m too busy, ask so and so” or gotten attitude or frustration from him.
Recently a few of us at work started talking about pitching in to buy him a cheap ride. Hit me up if you’re interested in that. If not, no worries at all.

Nah...not worried about the money or tax implications...I’m perfectly fine just giving it away. I just don’t want to get blind sided with a ‘you gave me a car that was wrecked and now it spontaneously combusted, you were negligent, now I own your house’ kind of deal. All the while making sure it’s someone that’s not gonna scrap it for drug money or piss and moan that someone gave them a wrecked car. Your dude is the exact kind of guy I’m looking for. Otherwise I was thinking about just putting a fender and headlight in it, get it sprayed and giving it to my church to be used however they saw fit. Told the wife I wanted something new by the end of January, so if something doesn’t happen locally, I’ll be in touch.

This guy obviously doesn't work inside sales!

Nope, but he certainly isn’t entitled like most I work with. He pulls orders in the warehouse for customers and they all love him.
Last year someone from Charlotte came up to get something, dude was a superintendent for our single largest account (over $3mil/year) and he made an extremely rude and racial remark to this guy. Jeremy (my guy) didn’t say anything, just looked shocked and hung his head a little and pulled the guys material anyway. I caught wind of it about 2 minutes after the guy left (luckily for me and him) but told our HR person what happened. The CEO of my company called the owner of that company and told him which one of their guys signed the ticket and told him “if that’s how your people speak to my people we don’t need to do business together anymore”
That dude doesn’t work for them anymore.

I was blown away by my CEO doing that, but even more blown away by how Jeremy handled himself when that redneck POS talked to him that way. Honestly I think it hurt him more than angered him but he just did his job, like he always does.

I've donated a car to a charity event, then found out I could only claim my "taxable" [20%] Of the amount it raised! O well. Many charity's, like Salvation Army, Goodwill, Vets, & some Churches, accept cars. A "few", such as Catholic Church, the car has to be drive-able, & you have to deliverer it. Many others will accept it or pick it up, regardless of condition. If not repairable, they scrap it & get the money.
As per having a need friend, I do too. But, sounds like "Jeremy" may be More needy!

That due doesn’t work for then anymore.

Damn right! Sounds like a straight up dude...my hat's off to him. From what it sounds like, the world needs more people like this guy. I certainly have a soft spot for people that pick themselves up by their boot straps and GSD for them and their family.

Random thought, but maybe start a GoFundMe type thing here, minus the actual GoFundMe b.s. for the needed repairs on your car.

That way you aren't spending money on the car you plan to give away, and the dude @77GreenMachine knows gets a car???

Just a thought, but I am down to kick in a few bucks.

Or if you're looking for some fun, turn it into a derby car.
I'm quite sure @Dylan W. will drive it.

Not a bad thought, but again...really not a big deal. $300 in a fender and headlight...new. I’d just ‘un-Dog ear’ that corner on the hood...and spray it for under $500. Worth it to me for someone that can use it.

The ‘load it up with tannerite’ idea has cross my mind. Just figured there were better ways of getting rid of usable cars.

It's very cool you are willing to fix the car before donating it, but what about this????

I work at the Humane Society of Davie County and they have a really simple program for donating a car. Here is the information on it if you want to donate it (I don't believe condition of the vehicle is important at all):

Donate your car, truck, RV, motorcycle, boat or other vehicle the CARS way. CARS makes it easy to donate your vehicle. To get started, go to http://www.cardonatingiseasy.org/ and choose HSDC to donate to; complete the secure online donation form or call 855-500-RIDE (7433) to speak to a representative. All that you will need to provide is the Certificate of Title upon pickup of your donated vehicle.
