I've been thinking about joining up. I'm mostly interested in the Air Force with the Navy and Coast Guard being my other options. What AFSC/Rating do you have and how do you like it?
oh thanks Chris, I guess we've forgotten all about the Army. haha. just kidding. PM me if you've got any questions. I've been in 3 years and been stationed at Fort Bragg the whole time. gotta love jumping out of planes.
I was in the AF and loved it very much but busted up my knee pretty bad. There are a lot of good jobs you can get just try your best to stay the hell away from Ellsworth AFB SD. That place pretty much just plain sucks.

13 1/2 years A.F. here. I have loved every minute of it. Stay away from Security Forces, Services, and Crew Chiefs. They have the tendency of getting screwed LOL. Make sure you go with a contract for a job. Do no go in with an open job, you will get the bottom of the barrel. I am an aircraft mechanic (specialist, Aircrat fuel systems repair). PM me if you have any questions. I will do my best to help you out and be honest about the different careers. Good luck and remember no matter what branch you join you will be one of few and honored by all wish any common sence.
The Army doesn't seem to be the branch for me and the same goes for the Marines. Not knocking them at all, just isn't me. I do appreciate yall though!
I'm definitely not going unless I can get a guaranteed job. I kinda figured those that went in as an open field get the shaft. I'm basically wanting a job that doesn't require riding a computer chair all day but not straight up grunt work either. Most importantly, I want a job that I can use the skills I've learned outside of the military. Like, I wouldn't do Security Forces simply because I have no desire to get into law enforcement.
If yall have a few ideas which jobs to check into more deeply let me know. The brief job descriptions on AF.com and About.com don't help much at all.
yeah cltba is right I just hit my 4 year mark a few months ago but i signed up for 6,and yes gmc above is right also about crew chiefs cause thats what I do!lol! The job is actually cool if you ask me but does get very old but so has the military to me.I come from a country small town and the military has shown me some awesome places but also some Hell holes(such as afghanistan, iraq 3 times in just my 4 years) Im ready to get out and live a normal life again but I DO NOT regret it at all even if I do bitch about it sometimes. Now Im ready to get out and use uncle sams money since the new GI bill not only pays for my schooling when I get out but also pays for me to live somewhere as long as Im going to school!
PM me if you have any questions about jobs and anything that the BS recruiter is telling you.My opinion would be look into Metals technology its pretty much working in a machiene shop but you have the best of the best machienes and you learn ALOT of skills you can use when you get out.
JoeD has been in the airforce long enough to remember the name change from the old army air corps (1947).I think Reagan was pres.when he joined and has one more year to go.They are retiring that model and going with the JoeD-A2 and promises it to be a much better design.
Navy man here, I loved it too.
I got to see the world and drink beer in some of the coolest places.
In the Navy, youre always near a beach...with bikini clad hotties.
whatever you decide, make sure you get a rate (job) that you can use once you get out.
not alot of need for guys who can throw grenades and snipe insurgents from 1000yards here on the outside.
your service will be appreciated.
I was a 3c0 for 8 years in the air force. It is/was computer systems. When I got out it allowed me to transition to the civy sector pretty easy. Got stationed at Offut and Moody both weren't too bad could have been worse.
i did 4 years in the Coast Guard...Loved it..You can do so much, plus your pretty local...if you want to be. Excellent mission profile, depending on your locations..Florida= law enforcement, great lakes, Pacific Northwest= SAR...

Nothing personal meant about crew cheifs LOL. Metals tech is a pretty good job. Sheet metal is similar and most of the time (from my deployments) they do the same jobs when dwn range. At least they did with the A-10's and 130's. Civil Engineering is another option. Could be an electrition, plumbing, or many other optons as well.
