when i was 16-18 i was big into single track and a little downhill and rode alot. once i discovered rock crawling (and that "gett'in high" stage) i lost interest and got all fat. I sold my old full suspension stump jumper and have had my original 97' hard rock the whole time. i drug it out today to discover the shifters were bad. i took it to the bike shop and they told me it wasnt worth fixing up. i really just want something to ride until i get back in shape and then look at upgrading to a full suspension unit. i want to be able to ride some mild single track and on the road. i dont want some pussy looking crossover bike or anything, i want a real mountain bike. what should i look for? i would like front suspension w/ lock outs. i need some advise from some folks that are into the sport. i need to buy something used and for as cheap as possible, my current trail rig has soaked up all my reserve funds. i like specialized stuff but, what do i know, i am open to anything good. HELP! guys. thanks -j

biking

I race Downhill and freeride and am at the same point you were at(17 starting to move from biking to 4wheeling) and if all thats bad is your shifters and your just looking for something to crusie for a while i would say get some cheap shifters(i probably got a set i can give ya) and just ride that untill you wanna go full suspension, just my thoughts on it

well, i don't know much. But, I bought a new front suspension bike about two years ago, after looking around i found a Fuji Tahoe. it has adjustable front shocks with lock out, hydraulic disk brakes, and was about $200 less than a similar equipped Specialized. For the amount of riding I do it's perfect.

that'd be great! the bike shop said my bike was so old that the "pods" were integrated into the brake levers and i would have to replace both. the tires are dry rotten, the cables are rusty. but honestly i think the cables would be ok. could i find a decent used bike for under 200$ ?

bike

hey man im pretty sure i got a set of brake leavers and shifter pods in my garage ill check in the morning the came off a hard rock as well there for an 8 speed with the 3 chain rings on the cranks so they should match up perfectly and if i got um you can have um there in great shape and as far as cables those are like a buck a peice so thats no problem and tires can really vary in prices but yeah ill let you know in the morning on the shifters.

sweet!!!! thanks. my brakes are center pull/cantilever will they work w/ those levers? my bike is also 7 speed but i bet they would still work. i may need to ask some questions about how to adjust it all. but yeah word thats real cool of you. thanks again

If he doesn't come through, i'm sure i've got some in the garage. I was big into freeride, downhill and urban, and I built up my Kona Stinky pretty nice. Full hydrolic so i have no need for my old brake levers, and i've got a bunch of shifters around somewhere, just will have to look for them a lil. Let me know.
A lot of bike shops tell you your bike is too messed up so that they can sell you a new one. Which shop did you take it to, just out of curiosity?

Could pick up an older klein off ebay for around 4. They are fantastic bikes. I rode a pulse and attitude for awhile and they are incredibly light and strong. I thought about getting back into it but to be honest I'm lost on parts these days
