I bought a 2000 s40 and was told needed a engine found a deal on one so bought it. When I got the car home I started to get into it and found that the t-belt came off and one of the cam pulleys had come off and 2 out of the three bolts that hold it were laying under the top timing cover and the 3rd was missing. Well my question is do I need to replace the engine or could I fix the pulley and replace the belt? I have done some minor stuff on volvos but nothing this into them. Any info will help thanks. Here is a pic of the way it looks now.

it's an interference engine so the valves should have made contact with the pistons when that broke. at min you would need new heads/valves or poss have the heads machined and damaged valves replaces.

maximum damage depends on if the pistons and cylinders were damaged or not. could have bent/broken rods too

edit: you could put it back together. set timing and check to see how easily it turns over and check cylinder compression.

I don't know on Volvo's but I know the timing belt/chain on our Nissan came apart like that and two people told us we needed a new motor at the price of about $2500.For the same reason they said the valves would've whacked the pistons and all that. One of my buddy's said to take it to "His Guy",I took it out to him,he spoke pretty much no english at all but a day later he had put a new timing belt and gears on it.It ran like a song,we put another 100,000 on it after that and sold it to my neighbor who still drives it everyday. The guy only charged me $200.

I have a v70 I know they are interference engines . The first thing I would do is line up the timing marks and put a good belt on it and check compression . If it has none I would pull the head and check the pistons and cylinders for damage . If it only bent valves I would buy the valves and do the work my self .I f you need parts call Foreign Accents in GSO and speak to Ross he knows his stuff about parts and knows what you would need. .

thanks for the help I bought a engine on ebay with 24k on it so will just put it in and keep this one for the extra parts I guess.
