At the risk of ridicule…Apex 12000?

If you are set on synthetic rope and that price point, it will be hard to beat the HF stuff. I was really happy with my smittybilt winch, If you step down to a 10k, you can probably pick one of the up with syn. In that price point.

Rural king had the same winch with a different name for less for a while

Man, I gotta make time to find and stop at one of these rural king stores....

Are we sure it’s the exact same winch internally? Looks a little different.

There are a lot of YouTube videos on the HF Apex and other than being a little slow it seems to be accepted that it is reliable.

$299 is a steal at RK if it is the same unit.

Maybe, maybe not. It's definitely not identical, but the internals are probably all manufactured at the same chinese government factory.

It would be a great deal if you could find one. I've been looking for months. I'm not even sure at this point if they exist!
Can’t you order and do ship to store?

My BIL is in the HF Insider Club and time to time the Apex is on sale for a great price but not $299 great.

Apex with wire rope is on sale at HF at $499 for Memorial Day sale (Inside Track Members have early access)

Is there any better for the money?

Aren’t even some of the Warn winches Chinese now and most of the rest?

Well not sure if or when the synthetic one will go on sale but with wire you have a more durable product in abrasive environments I suppose.

For what it’s worth, I will never go back to a cable after using rope for several years now. It’s so much nicer. I choose what it hits a little more carefully, and place the rash guard accordingly, but over all I love it and can’t stand when I have to winch someone and they have a cable. I really abused an $80 Amazon rope for a few years with no issue. For the price, I could replace it every other year if needed, and splicing on the trail takes a few minutes.

I have had good luck with SmittyBilt. Not the fastest winch around, but certainly not the slowest either. If I were in the market for a winch right now it would be the SmittyBilt XRC10 with rope. Admittedly, I have not looked into the HF winch to have an opinion. But there is the stigma for people saying “all that money and they got a Harbor Freight winch”. (It’s me, I’m people) Can’t hate though if it’s really not bad for the price point. I think Warn is over priced and overrated these days. Rant over lol.

For a cheap winch, the Badlands has had pretty good reviews.

I’m not sure if Badlands/RK/other cheap winches are good or if the Warn, etc winches are just that much of a piece of crap.

to get a decent winch beyond the random Chinese junk, it seems ya have to spend at least $1500. And is that $1500 winch 5 times better than the cheap $300 winch?

I've had my HF badlands Apex 12k for almost a year now. I don't do heavy wheeling and recovery so take this with a grain of salt. But its working fine for me. Has more accessories with it then I expected. Battery cut off switch. fully remote winch controller plenty of line saver coils nicely made hook soooo many stickers.

If you are anywhere near Union County you can crawl over mine and take a look if you want.

Has anyone seen or used the Smittybilt X2O Comp 10k? Comes with synthetic rope and wireless. I have found one for $549 which is a good bit less than most places.
