Hey guys (and gals), Is anyone out there running an Aussie Locker? Do you like and how does it compare to other automatic (lunch-box) lockers that you have used and are familiar with.
I am thinking about putting one in my 93 XJ front Dana 30. I use it as a daily driver most days so I need it to be street friendly.
Any opinions, comments welcome.

I have two. One in my D30 and one in my Ford 8.8. So far I am loving them. I don't seem to have the issues normally associated with other automatic lockers. There is a tiny bit of torque steer getting in the gas in 4th and 5th. There is also the expected clicking going around corners along with an occasional pop or bang but that doesn't seem to happen often. With tight low speed turns I can feel them grab and let go. And on the trail it is all good except for the widened turning radius. Overall I am pretty happy compared to what I have heard and seen with other automatic lockers. Can't beat the warranty or the price.

thanks joel
I am leaning toward the Aussie for the price and all the good things I have heard about them but I am considering the Detroit Tru Track for the on-road performance. I would just hate to pay more ($360) for less off-roadability.

I have one in my HP 30 as well. Liked it so much that I bought another for my 8.8, but I haven't gotten to wheel on it yet.

You can't get much better bang for your buck unless you go with a spool, and that's not very street friendly.

With the front locker, as long as you're in rear wheel drive, you shouldn't even notice it. The only way you should be able to tell its in there is the ratcheting noise when making tight turns as stated above.

I've had the Front aussie locker since July 2004. I've probably put 10,000 miles on it in that time (not a DD so probably 1/4th of that locked in 4wd), and haven't had a problem with it.
The install was pretty easy. I spent more time getting all of my tools and stuff together than actually installing it. If you haven't pulled your front shafts and unit bearings before, it will take you a lot longer. I go into my front axle pretty regularly these days, so I can do it in a couple of hours start to finish.
If you want to check the gaps as recommended in the instructions (which you have to do for them to honor the warranty), you need to have some kind of feeler gauge or caliper or some kind of similar measuring device. A tape measure just doesn't cut it.

another person who loves them, I had them f/r in my D30/AMC20 setup before I went to Waggy D44s and moved up to full Detroits.

same comment as Hank on the install, it was very easy and the second one went real quick after the experience on the first one. If you can pull your shafts you can do this fine. One word of caution is to mark the bearing caps/bolts for l/r and top/bottom, (IF you have to pull the carrier that is) because they need to go in exactly as they came out. That's really the only gotcha, the instructions are really good. Read them through and bench build the thing once and it should be a breeze.

Thanks for all the good info. guys. One last quick question IF you were to pay a shop to do the instal for you what would you feel would be a FAIR price? $150, $250 (more/less)?? .25 cents (joke)

I have a EZ Locker which is very similar to the Aussie, and I regularly wheel with JeepinHank and I'm happy with mine.

I really dont think you need to pay a shop to install spend 40 on gas and drive to my house and we can install it in an hour. There are a lot of people that could install a lunchbox locker blind folded. Let me know if you need help, who are you closest to?
