Auto Trannies in Ram 3500s?

Not even interested in the 6 spd manual, but thinking pretty seriously about a new Dodge Ram 3500 Mega Cab. (3500s are all diesels according to their build/price site)

I know Chevy has the allison behind the DMax, but I just don't "know" about the DMax. I "know" the Cummins is the stuff...and I "think" I have heard the newer Trannys are good!? (Yeah I know not as good as manual but have wife who refuses to think about a stick)

Could you compare the new (06..07?) Trannys to the Allison strength/long term durability. (Yeah been searching and the older dodges had issues which seems to keep coming up, but I know they use a "new" 4spd behind the cummins now)

48RE. It's a good update on the design, but they really need a 5-speed auto.

At any rate, it is a better trans than the 47's, but there's still plenty of room to grow.

The Allison is the best OEM auto tranny behind the diesels. Too bad it's got an overly complex turd in front of it.. :flipoff2:

hijack: what are you doing with the excursion sam?

Will prob put it up for sale after I get back from the beach in couple weeks! Needs a good detailing etc but new BFG A/Ts (E rated), 78k miles, etc. Nada guide puts it at 26k retail, 22k trade in, KBB has 20ish-21ish for the lower value too. As most of you know it was rebuilt by my dad last year, but it has a "clean" title. (Which leads me to not put much faith in carfax...) But will adjust the value for that some, has been rebuilt over a year now and running good...

Reason I am looking is now that we have the camper I need a pickup instead of SUV. That way I can put an atv in the bed or my motorcycle and still pull the camper. (Or a small buggy, 1 seater is another possibility with the right kind of rack bolted into the bed, rear tires then over the cab, etc)

Ok...back to trannies, so the 48 is better... but still no allison...and rumors of a something diff for the 07 models possibly?

We've got 5 trucks at work with 48re's and no problems. Two have over 100k, and one of those is our delivery truck and never unhooks from a trailer. They have been fine for us. Two of the trucks have quadzilla boxes on them and are dealing with the power fine.

There are rumors about the new tranny next year, but i have heard a few different things. One report said the new tranny will only be in the new 3500heavy duty trucks, so who knows.

I would not let that 48re scare me away from an otherwise awesome truck. That tranny is at least as good as the tranny in the excurison.

Too bad that turd is steadily making the Dodge smaller in it's mirrors...:flipoff2:

Go with the GM. 650 lb. ft. of torque and a 6 speed auto. My dad owns an '06, and I have an '01. Zero problems out of either.

I know CAT just came out with a auto trans to compete with Allison but no word yet on it going in anything but a RV.

You have the only duramax in history that hasn't had injectors replaced, apparently....

Anyway, come see me when you've got 260k... then we'll compare problems. :flipoff2:

Sorry for the hijack, but there is a guy on PBB w/ an '04 duramax with 375,xxx on it; said he has had one injector replaced. Don't know if it is a manual or auto, but that's impressive.

I'd just get good with shifting gears, I've yet to see an Auto. (over a long time and various models) outdo a manual. Now ...all you brand loyal nut cases come on out and tell me about your buddies truck with a half million miles and the original auto in it....I'm talking about as a whole, not you/your buddies truck. Heck, I'll even start...the Dodge I sold my buddy is a '98 12v CTD over 350k...original AUTO transmission, they just got lucky and built a good one that day based on their track record with autos.

Heck, i was just stirring the shit anyway.. it's fun.

Interesting tidbit... always something NEW coming around the corner:

3500 Cab chassis models will be coming with the 6.7L cummins starting nowish and behind them is a 6 speed AUTO from AISIN!

Expectations are this will release into the 2500/3500 as 2007.5 model...Hmm... who wants to bet a 6 spd will get better MPG around town at the least?

"downside" is the 6.7L is the 2007 epa regs change motor.. 305/610 torque is the specs I saw...

So...wait and get "unproven" motor / AISIN (improved?) tranny or get the tried true 5.9L and the four measley geared auto 48rish?

What did they extend the injector warranty to? That sounds dang good if you were referring to the '01 truck's warranty.

375,000 miles / say 55mph gives 6818 hrs (say 10 hrs per day) at 55 mph that gives you 681 days ............

Drive 681 days in a row 10hrs a day for to get you 375,000 miles on an 04.

Dam thats about 2 years of 10 hr days 7 day a week on a 2 year old truck!!!!!!!!

But if if was on the web it muse be true.

you can also buy an 04 in june of 03. I work on a Mercedes C320 with over 330k on it and it's an 04'...not sure if I believe the guy or not, but it's possible

Very possible but I have known a lot of truck drivers that do long haul and none run 7 days a week at an av 55mph for two years, even with a two man long haul team. I could see cars getting that many on them being in sales running 5-6 days a week and then use it as a DD but most of the time trucks will be towing or hauling, think about two fuel stops a day and any down time to work on the rig loading/unloading weigh stations thats a lot of miles.
If you had weekends off thats 2 years 7+ months.
Wonder what the max you can drive under the dot regs for time in a year.

The guy posted under "show us your towrig". Said he drives 3k-5k a week, delivering boats.

DOT regulations is probably why they are running 1 tons and not something bigger, running in that grey area.

Do you really think most drivers follow strick DOT guide lines? I know several that tell me they don't, if they did the $$$$ wouldn't be worth it. I'm not saying it's a good idea, I'm just saying don't think that doesn't happen on a regular basis.

So who are they?
Just so happens I work for DOT and can get something done about that. ;)

step out on I85 and I'd bet it's one in ten maybe more :driver:

I'm so happy that I work in a different DOT office I'm in design, but I do talk to them all the time. The way things change and regs for different drivers are hard to keep up with.
I always thought it was a joke that the person driving fills the log book out and the DOT just look it over.
Be like getting pulled by the NCSHP and he ask if you have been drinking so you go to your log book and say " Got it here Mr. HP no drinking today that starts Friday." :shaking: " Yep I read it the same you are good to go!!" :driver:
