Axle Breathers

I have heard folks talking about the bellows swelling and popping when running them on the street or at speed for longer distances.

I say run a hose up and/or use a sintered brass filter at the end.

Especially after seeing my Dana 300 and diffs puking fluid on a hot day. No way a little breather like that will last. If it can’t vent then the fluid is just going to push out of your seals at the axle shafts or pinion.

Gear oil is cheap but damn does it smell and always make a mess.

I had a Dana 300 heat up one time on the way up to Uwharrie. From where we left was about a 3 hour drive. I was in front, my buddy Quinn was behind me in a JK and Gillis Coleman was behind him in his '07 JK on 40s. This was back in '09, and I think his JK was an '08 or '09. I was driving a clapped out XJ. At some point the rubber breather tube came unfastened and landed on my exhaust tubing just right to where it melted it shut. The original seals tapped out under pressure and let out a fine 80/90wt mist ALL over Quinn's entire Jeep. Grill, hood, axle, radiator, windshield....yeah. By the time we got to Uwharrie and hit the first dirt road, his JK looked like it was growing fur.
I rode tailgunner from then on.

I'm with others.
Put a nipple on it, ran a long hose up and tight to the frame, the into the body, filter on end.
The one in front it tied to the firewall iirc.

I have bellows on both my axles and tcase.
No problems.

But I don't run them at speed for long periods of time. If I were to do so, I'd revert back to vented to atmosphere with a catch can.

Ditto. Both axles, transmission, and t-case are all about 5' at the top of the hoses.
