axle strength

On a 60, king pin is considered the strongest.

D44's never came in a king pin configuration, only closed knuckle and ball joint. Only D60's and early D30's came with kingpins. Downsides to the closed knuckle are smaller turing radius, only room inside for a 260 joint and coarse spline shafts. Ball joints tend to shear when put in a serious bind(read broke axle joint) but the ball joint axles run 297 joints with the exception of the EB D44's. I'd just stay with a ball joint axle though for simplicity and moneys sake. IMO the knuckle assembly itself it stronger on the closed variety but to beef up all the other weaknesses on a closed knucke axle you are looking at spending a good bit and might as well go with a D60. Hope this helps.

the closed knuckle 44s are popular with the Mudd trucks

They did but they were rare. 66-70 F100s had them.

I stand corrected. Learned something new today.

They had drums on the front didn't they? I saw one of those in a bone yard.
