just wondering the weight difference. Im planning a axle swap on my dd yj. just wondering since its main duty will be on hwy. what the weight difference woud be between a 9 inch hp 44 set up and a set of d 60's.

last time i looked it up the d60 front weighed 550-600 dry. d44 has to be like 350.

i think over all a disc 60/60 would be 300lbs heavier then 44/9

did some surfing last night. not sure if im correct. but looks like the d 44/9 combo weighs about 550. and im guessing 900-1000 on the 60 combo. never found the weight for the rear 60. so would that make much of a difference in a dd? 300 to 400 lbs

There's not much difference between the rear 60 and 9. I'd guess 50 pounds at the very most if much less for the 60 hubs and extra 6 lugs? The shafts of a 31 spline 9 are slightly heavier than a 30 spline 60. It's the fronts that matter.

Another perspective: A fat sweaty chic next to you during the commute would add around 300+ lbs.;) I usually laugh at 70 or 80 pounds comparing it to a small child. But I guess every pound does add up...

I'd bet a ff rear 60 is closer to 100lb heavier than a 9" as long as we aren't also including brakes. I weighed my front hp60 with truss/ram mount and it wasn't that heavy...just over 500. I was surprised.
You will feel an extra 400lbs of unsprung weight.

Another thing to consider is rotating mass if you really going for light weight and keep the vehicle quick. Aluminum wheels vs steel.

My stepdad was a drag racer back in the day and they used a 28 spline 9" and ran high 5's in the 1/8'th with a mini-spool. I'd say a 28 spline 9 would hold up fine off road too? Guessing 20-30 pounds lighter or more??? This is pure rotating mass difference.

28 spline 9's are found under pre '72 F-series (60" wms) and Post '73 2wd F-series with either 302 or 300 I-6 stock (65" wms). 28 spline was standard under every passenger vehicle Ford ever equipped with a 9" (various wms).

I've got a few 9's and D60 rears and I'd love to have a scale that could handle the weight to tell the truth. I swear I don't see it (especially if converted to disk). If someone gets bored and wants to take a trip with me to the scales sometime?

I saw an EB on the top of Daniel several years ago with a broken stock 28 spline rear shaft. I didn't witness the incident, so don't know how hard he was standing on it.

I agree with Braxton that a D60 FF has to be 100 lbs+ heavier than a stock 31 spline 9". For some reason, I am thinking a stock 9" is about 225 lbs.

I'd run the smaller 9/44 set up. It is lighter and I believe the parts are cheaper. I do run a EB axle with the 28 spline but I have a light foot and no horse power. On another note Ford discontinued the 9 inch rear mostly because it ran the daytona style pinion support and duriong the gas crunch era this was sighted as a sorce of parisitic drag on the drivetrain and found after testing they improved fule millage by dropping the design. (statement found in my ring and pinion book from Randy's)

I can pick up a complete 9" rear. I cannot pick up a complete D60FF rear. The hubs alone have to weigh 50lbs each assembled. And thats where most of the weight difference comes from.

i started to just pm u . since u had yours built with tons then went back down to the 30/35. i have a stroker engine on the stand. thats the reason behind the swap. i had the 44/9 planned for the swap. but need to regear. just ended up with a set of 60s with the gear im wanting to run. so weighing out the difference now

I don't trust the D35 with my motor and driving style. But the D30 should survive, so a 44 would be fine. I managed to break stuff on 35's and small 38's with the 60's, but it was more fluke things. I've seen what a 9" can hold up to, and I've ran a D30 on 36's, so I should be fine with that.

Lol :flipoff: Braxton. I made a couple trips this yr. Where's yours?
When u going to be moved back in town to help with this mess?
These are going up under the green 1. The plus with the 60s is they ready. Just convert the rear to disk. The 9/44 are geared 3.55. Those were the original plan until I got these. Just been waiting to regear them.
