axle width

I know that a lot of manufacturers have the front axle a couple of inches wider than the rear. Why? What happens if the rear is the same as, or a little wider than the front? Will my jeep handle ok on the street ?

reason i am asking. I have a widetrack dana30 front that is roughly 56" WMS-WMS, i have a rear that i am wanting to swap in that is roughly 58". I can space the front out some (enough to match the rear), but am not really comfortable running spacers much over 1" on the dana30. Would rather not run a wheel spacer if it isn't necessary.

it helps with the turning radius... in a short wb vehicle it might be a little worse, but I wouldnt worry with it much... spacers may hurt or help depending on the wheels, as it may help/hurt the scrub radius...

Wider front makes the vehicle track better, aids the front axle to steer and the rear axle to follow, tends to handle better especially @ highway speeds. Hey I learned that on this forum credit to who posted it earlier!!!!
