Looking to get my Pops a backup camera system for his pickup for Christmas (its not Xmas, dammit). Corded is fine, large screen is better. Want one that will last, not too concerned about $, but dont need a trillion $ one.

Opinions?

btw, :huggy::huggy::huggy: and a  or two!

I work for autozone and the one we sell there is pretty nice. Ultra simple hook up. Its a cordless camera and the monitor just plugs into a cigarette lighter. They are also fairly inexpensive. I think there is also a $20.00 mail in rebate on them right now. I have one on my wifes FJ cruiser and it works great.

That would be the cheapest and easiest route, there's some that run $2,000 or more. Is the camera going to be mounted on the pickup or on the back of a 5th wheel camper? If it's the camper mount i'd go with a better one because of the wireless interferance.

this is on a dakota pickup - no trailer normally.

x2 work for az and they seem like a good product

this one?...http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Peak-Wireless-back-up-camera-system-with-2-4-in-LCD-monitor/_/N-26n7?counter=0&itemIdentifier=825002_0_0_
looks like $80 minus a $30 rebate...that's not much at all, I was expecting over $200. I might have to put one on the wife's minivan.

Does the camera use little watch batteries? Not many details on the AZ website.

I bought a cheap one several years ago and have been happy with how it worked. Mounted to the license plate bracket and plugged into cigarette lighter. It worked good. One cool thing is when you drive around town you will see who has wireless cameras. Driving on 70 in Durham I would pass a used car lot that had wireless cameras and the picture would show up on my back up camera monitor. There was also a house that had one in their carport right as you got into Boone.

I stopped by the Zone today with intent to buy the one I linked above. The counterguy talked me out of it, he said they sold 3 and all have come back. I asked why, and didnt get much feedback, small monitor I think he muttered.
They had one setup in the store, but its hard to judge if the display will be too small when mounted in the van, hard to tell if you can see objects far enough away, etc. There were none in stock (website said they did), he said he could order one if I really wanted. I declined, but still might if I can't figure something else out for Christmas.

that's typical...

come on guys, is this the one that I want- the one being linked? I dont mind spending the $$ for Dads gift, just want one that he'll be happy with.

i dont think they are that bad. only a 3in monitor, but ive heard of guys go as far as mounting them under rigs pointed at the hogs head to watch it on rocks. obv you wouldnt use it to back/line up a trailer bc image would be small. if your looking for something really serious take it to car stereo place and have them wire up a 6in moniter in the dash w backup cam

the biggest deal to work with is how do you want to mount the monitor? There are several ways to do it, but in my opinion the nicest way in that truck would be a replacement rear view mirror. I will post you some links. Also most of the cameras are pretty inexpensive, usually in the 100.00 price range.

I really like this rear view mirror, it has navi built into it and bluetooth, but also has the ablilty to show rear view.

This should retail around 400.00 or so, but you may be able to find it online cheap?

oh and i dont like the autozone cams, i installed a handfull, and really.......you want something thats gonna be worth a damn cause obviously he doesnt wanna bang up his truck, so you wanna make sure it has a decent pic with depth perception being key!

Does he have a GPS? If not look at garmin their $500? GPS has a hook up for a wired back up camera. All you do is wire the power into the back up lights and it comes on when ever in reverse.
