What is the standard distance to keep between Baseboard heating and furnishings? Our new apartment has it, and Ive never actually used it before.

our oil baseboard heat we had as a kid growing up was the best heat EVER..... makes me hate my central air every time i think back to that house i grew up in....
we had our furniture 6-10" in the few places that there was actually furniture near the baseboards...
