I know I need driver side drop for my 98 xj front axle, but that's about it. I'm wanting to get some full width dana 60's, front and rear, so my question is are there some axles that take less fab work than others?

What is an easier swap is all relative but Fords are gonna be the drivers drop axles you are looking for. Look for a 78-79 kingpin 60 if you want full width but you are gonna have to get really lucky or pay for it. You could do an 8 lug 44 out of the same but heck if you are going as far as full widths just toss out the extra coin for the 60. Here is a source:

For the rear you have many more choices but the matching rear to the front that you end up getting will work fine or a 14 bolt chevy would be a good choice as well. Or if full width is too much an 86ish to 91 ford 60 front can be narrowed on one side and matched up to a 14 bolt rear with the c&c hubs for a nice combo around 63" I believe but a little more work. Full width Ford is around 69" I think but that's going off my poor memory.

A lot depends on use of the vehicle and how big you are going. If you are playing in mud it is more forgiving than rocks. I run a 44 and 9" in my XJ. But I mainly play in mud. I have a little more clearance under the diffs since they are smaller. I run 38.5's but I am mostly in the mud. I am easy on the skinny pedal on the rocks to. But back to your question it's all about what you are going to use it for and tire size. The fab work is about the same regarless what axle you choose.
