I'm looking to build a crawler over the winter and need some ideas on a manual transmission that would give me a great low speed crawl.
I would like it to mate to a Ford 302.
I have looked at the T-18 and NP435 as good choices but I could always use other ideas...

ZF S5-42

1st isn't as low as the 435, but it has OD.

a slush box is a term for an auto...

^ Rich is correct.....but an sm420 has a 7:1 first gear if your after a 4 spd. However, it is Chevy so probably won't mate to Ford 302.

I was just going to say the same thing...

if you have a 302, stay with the T18 for simplicity and costs. SM420 is nearly impossible to find parts for anymore (unless someone has stepped up recently I don't know about)

I believe they had Dana 20's behind them, at least in the AMC they did. You can get adapters from Advance adapter to put about anything you want. I know for a fact they have an adapter for the Dana 300

The T-18 sounds like the ticket then.....I am going to put it in a little single seat buggy I have plans for....just trying to get my ideas straight.

I am running a d300 with a t18. Best damn investment so far. It will not give trouble period, and the crawl ratio works really well for the terrain here.

T-18's and np435's both came in 78/79 Bronco's with the NP 205. Both are nearly the same, very reliable and great combo's and I believe either will bolt right to the 302. Somebody else will confirm that for sure. I've seen both tranny's behind V6 and small block Fords. In fact. I have an np435 bolted to a np205 sitting in my barn that just came out of a 78 Ford if you are interested.
