ok, heading down again this weekend with the family(oak island). Pops and I fish alot, but we've only done the pyramid sinker/2 rigged hook setup. I do this because EVERYBODY does this, and it works. however, when I see the mullet going ape $hit on the surface right in the waves, it gets me thinking- is something in there chasing them, or are they just traveling? whats the best way to find out? I do get in there and cast the net for a few as bait, but thats about it. I cant imagine there arent some blues or trout in there chasing them. btw, no little half corpses appear during this time, only randomly do you see them on shore unless its overnight and birds arent typically present. sooo, what gives? any artificial methods worth trying out? :huggy:

surf fishing

during the summers sometimes we will kayak out a line as far as it will go with a live mullet and a weight on it carolina rigged so it can swim around, usually just catch big sharks but its still fun having the bait way out past the breakers

A carolina rig with a live mullet in the surf can usually find a few blues, flounder or drum, and the occasional trout. I've also had a little luck with a 1/4oz jighead and a 4-5" gulp or paddletail shad. Gotcha plugs or MirrO lures can get you a few drum, trout or blues as well. www.ncangler.com has pages and pages of information and tips as well.

Spot should be running this time of year, right? Seems like October is the time when you can fill a cooler pretty quick on the NC coast.

I'll be down to our place at Oak Island this Friday thru Sunday. We like heading to Fort Fisher. You can use every thing from live to cut bait. The wife uses mostly shrimp, blood worms and sand fleas for smaller stuff. I like large cut bait for shark, drum ray and whatever shows. Also check out.. Pierandsurf.com. They are east coast and largly NC based. I won't go into rigs weights etc here that would yake up 10 pages...lol If you're down that way the 5th-7th drop us a line.

I usually use a carolina rig with live or fresh caught cut bait or I use jigheads with something like a berkley saltwater rubber bait or a gotcha plug
