What amount of each do you run in your tow rig? At what price will you stop using the pump and start using another alternative fuel. It will be over $4.00 a gallon by the summer. I heard this from a guy who is in the oil business. He and his wife both own oil companies. When will you make the switch?

So someone who "owns an oil company" (which is basically the last middleman before the ordinary consumer) is somehow an expert on the market?

And he and his wife own oil companies, but not the same one....

I'm sure I'll get my legs striped for saying this, but I think by the time you run around gathering WVO,buy materials, and count your time, that it won't be such a screaming deal. Not counting having to have a place to store/process the WVO.
Anybody have any real #'s to the contrary??

EVERYTHING costs something, whether it be monetary or time.

- Most folks with more $$ than time will never attempt making bio or converting to grease. The exception here might be those with "deep environmental concerns".
- Most folks without the ability to add additional income will likely pay with time to brew bio or filter grease. Some will do it for the novelty

You have to decide for yourself where to draw the line between the amount of either you're willing to spend to haul your junk up/down the highway.

That's what I'm sayin. The greasecar kit for my PSD is $1300 without any option's and I figure Ill spend at least 1/2 that much getting thing's goin.I would like to try it but I dont see the payoff being much.Mine has 344K on it and might not last long enuf to break even.
I hate it,but I'm like most everybody else spending my $75 min at the pump. My second tank hasnt been full for months.

I converted my rig years ago solely for the ability to go on road trips for free. It has paid for itself 6 times over in that time. Now i have the ability to go to TN to wheel and not have the fuel expense to deal with.

my truck: 10-11 mpg
30 gals. to ure and back for example.
30 gals. @ 3.50 gal==$105.00 each trip in diesel

TELLICO is approximately 65 gals both ways= $210.00

system pays for itself in 7100 miles at an investment of $2500 using 10 mpg as a standard.

If you drive one of those magical tow rigs that get 20mpg with a trailer behind them thru the mountains then your break even point is 14,200 miles

I have around 30,000 miles on grease now.

I have heard tale of the mythical 20MPG while towing, and believe it is just that,a myth.I appreciate the breakdown on the #'s,but what I really want to know is how many hour's(day, week, month, however you do it) that you spend collecting/processing the WVO.
Not trying to make it a call out or anything,Im just on the fence about the whole deal and want some real world number's.

it takes way too much time, grease can be hard to come by at first.

no seriously, it takes me about 20 minutes to gather about 125 gals and filter 40 of those into the run tank. my "source" is near my work so travel is a minimum. I gather about once every 6 wks. i use my truck for tow duty and home depot duty only.

Mine is my DD,that is why I was wanting some #'s on gathering/processing times.

I have dual tanks and would probably keep one for diesel and the other for grease.

I spend about 2-3 hours every 2 weeks colecting and filtering. some times a little more or less depending on supply and how clean the oil is. This is for a usage of 100 Gallons per month
Filters are about $7 each and I use one for every 55 gallon.

I spend about 1200 for my conversion andi could do it for alot less if i did it again.

so if I use 100 gallons a month at 3.45 that is $345 per month or 4140 a year.

this is not including ant long trips I take

it depends of how much you drive it. I drive 330 miles a week

you will get about 10% less milage with WVO than diesel

With diesel I can get 21.5 on the freeway empty

Thank you.Thats more of what I'm lookin for.Mine get's 17-18 empty and I put anywhere from 200-600+ on it a week.Really depends on what I've found and where. I have ran nearly 100 gallons thru mine in one week before.
What would you do differently that would make it cheaper???

I just made some mistakes so I had to buy different stuf that replace stuf I allready have
I filter all or my oil offline and not in the truck. I use 5/1 microb filter bags and you can get therm from McMaster car

Greg, what kit you using? I've been wanting to do this for years, but haven't found anything that I'm confident in...

Thanks,
JayT

P.S. Love my ProComp leaf springs in my 90 BigBronco!! Thanks!

What a hack job,I would have been ashamed to post pics of that mess.:shaking:
